01 What makes it unique

The Basecamp 16X is the smallest, lightest, and most affordable trailer Airstream makes — and the easiest to tow. At 2,700 pounds dry on a single axle, it sits within reach of many SUVs and mid-size trucks without a weight-distribution setup, which is the whole point: it's built to be grabbed and taken somewhere remote, not parked at a resort. For Model Year 2026 the off-road X-Package is standard, so every 16X now ships with a 3-inch lift, Goodyear all-terrain tires on aluminum wheels, and stainless stone-guard protection.

Inside, the 16-foot shell runs a wrap-around front galley beneath panoramic front glazing — a two-burner cooktop, a 3.1 cu ft 12V refrigerator, and a sink — with a rear lounge that converts to a bed for two and a wet bath (shower, toilet, and sink in one waterproof compartment) tucked along the side. The floor is an aluminum Aircraft L-track system with tie-downs for bikes, boards, and gear, and a swing rear hatch opens the back for loading. As with every Airstream, there are no slide-outs.

It's a capability-first trailer, so the comfort numbers are modest: a 21-gallon fresh tank, a wet bath rather than a separate shower, and sleeping for two are the trade for the light weight and small footprint. It runs a 30-amp service with optional rooftop solar and lithium for off-grid stays. Starting MSRP is $54,900 — the entry point to Airstream ownership, and the only model many smaller tow vehicles can pull.

03 Basecamp floorplan family

The Basecamp line — Airstream's single-axle off-road trailers. Two gas floorplans (16X and 20X) plus the all-electric Basecamp Xe. The 16X on this page is highlighted; each other plan links to its own profile.

FloorplanNominalSleepsNotable
16X16 ft2Most towable; front galley; wet bath
20X20 ft4Larger; U-dinette + rear benches
20Xe20 ft4All-electric; 10.3kWh lithium

For Model Year 2026 the off-road X-Package (3-inch lift, all-terrain tires, stainless rock guards) is standard on both gas floorplans. The Basecamp Xe is the all-electric variant of the 20-foot body and is offered only in the 20-foot length.

04 What owners & reviewers report

The most towable Airstream

At 2,700 lb dry with a 410 lb tongue, the 16X opens Airstream ownership to mid-size SUVs and trucks — the single biggest reason buyers pick it over heavier models.

Built to haul gear

The aluminum L-track cargo floor with tie-downs and the swing rear hatch make it a genuine adventure trailer for bikes, boards, and packs — not just a small camper.

Two people, wet bath

Sleeping for two and a combined wet bath are the compromises for the small footprint; couples love it, but it isn't a family trailer.

Modest tankage

A 21-gallon fresh tank limits off-grid duration; longer remote stays mean planning water and dump stops.
