01 What makes it unique
The Basecamp 20X is the larger of Airstream's two off-road floorplans — four feet longer than the 16X, and built around feedback from owners who wanted more space and the ability to separate eating from sleeping. It sleeps four, where the 16X sleeps two, and it keeps the same single-axle off-road formula: for Model Year 2026 the X-Package (3-inch lift, Goodyear all-terrain tires, stainless rock guards) is standard. At 3,400 pounds dry it's still towable by many mid-size trucks and capable SUVs.
The extra length changes the layout: a front U-shaped dinette seats up to four around removable tables that adjust for dining, working, or relaxing, while the rear bench seating converts to flexible sleeping — split twins, a half-bed on one side, or a full 82-by-78-inch bed spanning the back. The 20X gains a separate 28-gallon gray tank (the 16X runs a combined wet-bath waste system), a larger 4.3 cu ft refrigerator, and the same aluminum L-track cargo floor and swing rear hatch for gear. There are no slide-outs.
It's the Basecamp for two couples or a small family who want the off-road capability without stepping up to a heavier dual-axle Airstream. Capacities are still modest by big-trailer standards — a 23-gallon fresh tank and a wet bath — but the separate sleeping and dining zones make it far more livable for four than the 16X. Starting MSRP is $60,800, about $6,000 over the 16X for the added length and berths.

03 Basecamp floorplan family
The Basecamp line — Airstream's single-axle off-road trailers. Two gas floorplans (16X and 20X) plus the all-electric Basecamp Xe. The 20X on this page is highlighted; each other plan links to its own profile.
| Floorplan | Nominal | Sleeps | Notable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16X | 16 ft | 2 | Most towable; front galley; wet bath |
| 20X | 20 ft | 4 | Larger; U-dinette + rear benches |
| 20Xe | 20 ft | 4 | All-electric; 10.3kWh lithium |
For Model Year 2026 the off-road X-Package (3-inch lift, all-terrain tires, stainless rock guards) is standard on both gas floorplans. The Basecamp Xe is the all-electric variant of the 20-foot body and is offered only in the 20-foot length.
04 What owners & reviewers report
Separate eat and sleep zones
The front U-dinette and rear convertible benches let four people dine and sleep in distinct spaces — the main reason owners step up from the 16X.
Flexible rear sleeping
Rear benches convert to split twins, a half-bed, or a full 82-by-78-inch bed across the back — adaptable to who's aboard.
Still a wet bath
Despite the extra length the 20X keeps a combined wet bath; buyers wanting a separate dry shower won't find one in the Basecamp line.
Modest fresh tank for four
A 23-gallon fresh tank stretches thin with four aboard off-grid — plan water carefully on remote trips.
05 How it compares
Four feet shorter and lighter, sleeps two, with a combined wet-bath waste system — the most towable Airstream, about $6,000 less.
The same 20-foot body, re-engineered all-electric with a 10.3kWh lithium bank, induction cooktop, and 600W solar — about $16,000 more.
A dual-axle road-going Airstream of similar length with a dry bath and more comfort, but heavier and without the off-road chassis.
