Camper Trailer Size Chart: How Wide, How Long, How Tall
The published exterior dimensions of 1,628 travel trailers and fifth wheels, and the federal width rule that shapes them.
Short answer. A camper trailer is almost always 8 feet (96 in) or 8 ft 6 in (102 in) wide. Of 1,467 floorplans here that publish a width, 1,146 are 96 inches or narrower and 245 are 101–102 inches. Open slide-outs, awnings and mirrors add to that.

The six most common published widths, n=1,467. Widths are rounded to the nearest inch.
Why 102 inches? Federal rules for the National Network of highways say: “No State shall impose a width limitation of more or less than 102 inches, or its approximate metric equivalent, 2.6 meters (102.36 inches)” (23 CFR 658.15(a)). That rule is written for the commercial-vehicle network; on other roads, and for recreational vehicles specifically, state law sets the limit. Check your state’s rule before towing something wider than 102 inches.
Width with the slides out is published for only some floorplans and is shown on their own pages where it is.
Length
The median travel trailer here is 29' 9" long overall (half between 24' 8" and 34' 5"; n=1,223); the median fifth wheel is 40' 0" (n=391). Each figure is the overall exterior length as the maker publishes it.

Common questions
How wide is a camper trailer?
Most are 8 feet (96 inches) or 8 ft 6 in (102 inches) wide. Of the 1,467 floorplans in this catalogue that publish an exterior width, 1,146 are 96 inches or narrower and 245 are 101 to 102 inches. That is the body width; mirrors, awnings and open slide-outs are wider.
What is the maximum legal width for a travel trailer?
For vehicles on the federal National Network of highways, 23 CFR 658.15 bars states from setting a width limit other than 102 inches (Hawaii keeps 108). Off that network and for recreational vehicles specifically, state law sets the limit, and states differ, so check your own state before towing anything wider than 8 ft 6 in.

Figures on this page are computed from the site’s own verified-specs dataset (1,628 floorplans; generated 2026-10-21), which is read from the floorplan pages and their named manufacturer and dealer-network sources. Dry, hitch and pin weights are as published, before options, water and cargo. Two published hitch figures that are physically implausible are printed on their pages with a flag and left out of every statistic here (conflicts). How the data is verified. Built 19 Oct 2026.
