01 What makes it unique

The Salem / Wildwood 26DBHD leaves Forest River's factory at 6,708 lbs dry with 2,000 lbs of cargo capacity. Forest River publishes no GVWR for this line, so the loaded rating is not quoted on this page and is not computed from the other two figures. What the cargo number covers is defined by the factory: fresh water, gear, food, batteries and every dealer-installed accessory come out of it. Fresh water is 8.3 lb per gallon, so filling the 40-gallon fresh tank spends 332 lbs of the 2,000 lbs before anything else goes in.

Tongue weight is 880 lbs, or 13% of the dry weight. Ten to fifteen percent is the conventional band for a bumper-pull trailer, and this plan sits inside it as published. Tongue weight is not fixed: it moves with how the trailer is loaded, and weight added ahead of the axles raises it. A weight-distribution hitch is the normal fitment at this tongue load, and the tow vehicle's tongue-weight limit is a separate number from its trailer-weight limit.

Tank capacities are 40 gallons fresh, 60 grey and 30 black, 90 gallons of waste capacity against 40 gallons of supply. The ratio is what governs how long the trailer can sit off hookups: waste capacity exceeds fresh, so the fresh tank is the binding constraint and refilling extends the stay. Forest River publishes these three figures per floorplan, and they are the factory's numbers rather than a segment average.

Against the rest of the Salem / Wildwood roster this is the 2nd of 7 floorplans by dry weight, in a line that runs from 5,803 lbs to 8,573 lbs. It sits in the lighter third of the line. Comparing floorplans inside one line is more reliable than comparing across brands, because every figure here comes from the same factory channel on the same day.

A useful way to read these figures is to stop planning against the dry weight. Nobody tows a trailer at 6,708 lbs: that is the weight before water, batteries, propane, bedding, food, tools and anything the dealer bolted on. Load half the published cargo capacity and this plan is already near 7,708 lbs on the road. Because Forest River publishes no loaded rating for this line, the ceiling has to come from the trailer's own weight label rather than from this page, and the comparison you make against the tow vehicle should use the loaded figure.

Every number above was captured twice from Forest River and checked against itself before it was published. The line listing and the individual floorplan page are two separate factory renderings of the same trailer, and this plan's 4 shared figures agree exactly on both. There is no published GVWR on this line, so the usual arithmetic check - dry plus cargo equals the rating - has nothing to test against here. Where a figure is missing from this page it is because Forest River does not publish it in this channel, not because it was hard to find - and the row says so rather than being quietly dropped.

Forest River's own description of this floorplan reads: “The 26DBHD is made for family weekends that start early and end around the campfire. Double bunks give the kids their own space, while parents can retreat to a private bedroom when the day winds down. Two entry doors keep everyone coming and going with ease, while Campfire-View Panoramic Picture Windows bring the campground into the space where the family comes together.” That is the factory's marketing copy rather than a specification, and nothing in it is treated as a verified field on this page - layout descriptions, sleeping arrangements and feature claims in factory copy are not carried into the spec table unless the factory also publishes them as specifications.

How the 26DBHD differs from the other six Salem / Wildwood floorplans. Most distinctive first. Each rank counts only the siblings that publish that field, and a figure most of them share is left out.

04 Notes on this floorplan

What Forest River does not publish for this line

Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are absent from Forest River's specification channel for Salem / Wildwood, so they are absent here. They are not estimated from the segment, not carried over from a sibling floorplan, and not taken from a dealer listing quoting itself. A tire size in particular is a safety-relevant number that differs between two codes a digit apart, and this site does not guess one.

There is no factory GVWR for this trailer

Forest River publishes dry weight, cargo capacity and tongue weight for every Salem / Wildwood floorplan and publishes no GVWR for any of them. The factory's own glossary defines cargo capacity as GVWR minus UVW, which means the rating can be worked out - and a figure you worked out is not a figure the manufacturer published, so this page does not print one. Use the weight label on the trailer itself, which every Forest River unit carries.

Weigh it before you tow it

Every figure on this page is a factory publication for a standard build. Forest River's own footnote on unloaded weight calls it an estimated average based on a standard build with optional equipment, and options, dealer-installed accessories and the previous owner's additions all move it. The only weight that governs your towing decision is the one under your own trailer on a scale, loaded the way you actually travel.

05 How it compares

Lighter
Salem / Wildwood 26TBUD

5,803 lbs dry against this plan's 6,708 lbs, a difference of 905 lbs. Same line, same factory channel, same model year - so the gap is a real one rather than a difference in how two brands measure.

Heavier
Salem / Wildwood 27RK

6,863 lbs dry, 155 lbs more than this plan, and 2,892 lbs of cargo capacity against this one's 2,000 lbs. Stepping up a floorplan usually buys length before it buys payload.

Most cargo in the line
Salem / Wildwood 27RK

2,892 lbs of cargo capacity, the highest of the 7 Salem / Wildwood floorplans profiled here. If payload rather than length is the binding constraint, that is the plan to compare against.

06 Loading it for a trip

A full 40-gallon fresh tank is about 332 lb of water, 17% of the 26DBHD’s 2,000 lb cargo capacity, leaving 1,668 lb. Across 7 Salem / Wildwood floorplans the water share runs 11% to 25%, and 3 give up more than this one. Nearest on that share: Salem / Wildwood 26TBUD at 17% and Salem / Wildwood 32BHDS at 20%.

11 NHTSA safety record

NHTSA holds 64 recall campaigns and 183 owner complaints (model years 2005 on) against the Salem & Wildwood line. They are counted separately: a recall is a confirmed defect with a remedy, a complaint one owner’s unverified account.

What to look at on a used one. Across the 183 complaints filed on this line the most-reported components are tires (25%), structure (19%) and equipment (16%).

Recall coverage here is not complete, and complaints are owners’ unverified reports (how this record is built). Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the Salem & Wildwood line page.
