01 What makes it unique
The 27FB is the largest Trade Wind. Airstream publishes it for Model Year 2027 at 28 feet 2 inches long and 8 feet 5.5 inches wide, with a front primary bed (queen standard, twins optional), a two-piece mid-ship shower and lavatory, and a convertible booth-style dinette with a connected lounge. A rear hatch is available. Airstream lists it as sleeping up to five.
Its energy system is the largest in the line: 18.5 kWh of deep-cycle lithium batteries with built-in heating and cooling, a 6,000 W inverter, 600 W of roof solar with an interior monitor, and 50-amp shore power. It adds a second air conditioner, a 13,500 BTU dual-ducted unit with heat pump on 50-amp service, to the 15,000 BTU primary. In the same Airstream table the 2027 25FB lists 10.3 kWh, a 3,000 W inverter and 30-amp service.
Airstream publishes a 7,025-pound unit base weight (with LP and batteries) and an 8,300-pound GVWR, so the net carrying capacity is 1,275 pounds, and the two add up exactly. The hitch weight is 925 pounds. With the A/C and lift kit it stands 10 feet tall, so mind low clearances.
How the 27FB differs from the other two Trade Wind floorplans. Most distinctive first. Each rank counts only the siblings that publish that field, and a figure most of them share is left out. Not every one of these pages covers the same model years as this one (2027); each figure is the one its own page prints, so a rank compares pages, not one model year.
- Unit base weight, 7,025 lb: heaviest of three; next is the 25FB (6,300 lb).
- GVWR, 8,300 lb: highest of three; next is the 25FB (7,600 lb).
- Tongue weight, 925 lb: heaviest of three; next is the 25FB (725 lb).
- Tongue weight as a share of unit base weight, 13.2%: largest of three; next is the 25FB (11.5%).
- Length, 28 ft 2 in: longest of three; next is the 25FB (26 ft 2 in).
- Cargo capacity, 1,275 lb: second-smallest of three, between the 23FB (650 lb) and the 25FB (1,300 lb).
- Cargo capacity as a share of GVWR, 15.4%: second-smallest of three, between the 23FB (10.3%) and the 25FB (17.1%).
Next to the 25FB (2025 page), the nearest lighter floorplan by unit base weight, the 27FB is 725 lb heavier by unit base weight, has a GVWR 700 lb higher, has 25 lb less cargo capacity, has a tongue weight 200 lb heavier and is 2 ft longer; the two publish the same exterior height, interior height, fresh tank, grey tank and black tank.

Towing it
Check your vehicle. Enter the ratings from your owner’s manual and the door-pillar placard.
Compares your figures with this page’s published GVWR (8,300 lb) and the upper loaded tongue estimate (1,245 lb, a rule of thumb). Your vehicle’s placard and the trailer’s own weight label govern.
Loaded range: 10–15% of GVWR on the tongue, a rule of thumb, not a measurement of this unit. No truck ratings or hitch classes (why; NHTSA, DOT HS 809 433). The range starts at the published figure, because loaded is never lighter than that.
03 Trade Wind floorplan family
The current Trade Wind line — three dual-axle off-grid floorplans, each offered in queen or twin bedroom configurations. The 27FB on this page is highlighted.
| Floorplan | Nominal | Bedroom | Sleeps | Notable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 23FB | 23 ft | Front | 4 | Compact off-grid; $10k less; no rear door |
| 25FB | 25 ft | Front | 4 | Original; rear hatch optional; more payload |
| 27FB | 27 ft | Front | 5 | Largest; 18.5 kWh, 6,000 W; second A/C |
The 27FB figures are Airstream’s Model Year 2027 specifications, read 23 Oct 2026. The 23FB and 25FB rows link to their MY2025 records; Airstream’s 2027 figures for those two differ slightly.
04 Notes on this floorplan
Largest energy system in the line
18.5 kWh of heated and cooled lithium, a 6,000 W inverter, 600 W of solar and 50-amp shore power; Airstream lists 10.3 kWh and 3,000 W for the 2027 25FB.
Two air conditioners
A 15,000 BTU primary and a 13,500 BTU dual-ducted secondary, both with heat pumps; the secondary runs on 50-amp service.
Rear hatch available
Airstream lists a rear hatch as available on the 27FB, as on the 25FB.
925 lb on the hitch
200 lb more than the 2027 25FB’s published 725 lb. Loaded tongue weight runs higher still, and all of it counts against the tow vehicle’s payload.
05 How it compares
Two feet shorter, with a 3,000 W inverter, 10.3 kWh of lithium and 30-amp service in Airstream’s 2027 specifications.
The same nominal length in Airstream’s Flying Cloud line; compare its published weights and equipment on its page.
06 Loading it for a trip
A full 39-gallon fresh tank is about 324 lb of water (water counts as cargo: 49 CFR 571.110 S9.3.2), 25% of the Trade Wind 27FB’s 1,275 lb cargo capacity, leaving 951 lb. Across 3 Trade Wind floorplans the water share runs 25% to 47%, and 1 gives up more than this one. Nearest on that share: Trade Wind 25FB at 25% and Trade Wind 23FB at 47%. Your own unit’s figure is on the label inside its entry door (49 CFR 571.110 S9.3.3).

11 NHTSA safety record
NHTSA holds 1 recall campaign and 1 owner complaint (model years 2005 on) against the Trade Wind line. They are counted separately: a recall is a confirmed defect with a remedy, a complaint one owner’s unverified account.
Too few reports to show a pattern. 1 complaint has been filed on this line — not enough to say what fails most often. It covers structure.
Recall coverage here is not complete, and complaints are owners’ unverified reports (how this record is built). Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the Trade Wind line page.
