Bunkhouse vs couples trailers: what the extra beds cost in weight and length

303 bunkhouse and 274 couples travel trailers, compared by length band and line by line, using only the figures makers publish.

LAST UPDATED · FIGURES · 1,810 verified floorplan pages

Short answer. Across the floorplan pages here, bunkhouse travel trailers (n=303) run a median 30′ 4″ long and 5,938 lb dry, against 25′ 4″ and 5,052 lb for couples trailers (n=274). Most of that gap is length. Compare plans of the same length and the extra beds cost close to nothing. In 5 of 5 length bands the bunkhouse median dry weight is lower than the couples median. Inside the same line, 86 of 144 bunkhouse plans weigh less dry than the nearest-length couples plan (n=144 pairs).

01How this page sorts the plans

Bunkhouse means a travel trailer whose model code, as the maker prints it, contains “BH” (264BHS, 26DBH, 2800BH). That is the same rule the lightest bunkhouse guide uses: it is the makers’ own label, so nothing here is a judgment about a floorplan drawing. 303 of 1,352 travel-trailer pages qualify. Couples means a travel trailer without “BH” in its code whose published sleeping capacity is 4 or fewer: 274 pages. Plans in between (no BH code, sleeps 5 or more, or no published sleeps) are left out of both groups.

Limits of the rule: some makers code bunk plans without “BH” (QBUNK, DORM, BR), so a few bunk floorplans sit outside the bunkhouse group. Sleeping capacity is the maker’s own figure and is not published for every plan: 106 of the 303 bunkhouse pages have no published sleeps, so the sleeps medians use the pages that do. † Cargo capacity is shown only for makers whose own floorplan pages print it (Forest River, Jayco, East to West, Highland Ridge). For the others this site does not subtract dry weight from GVWR to make one.

03Same length, different beds

Set the plans in 4-foot length bands and the weight gap mostly disappears. The figures do not say why, but the floor plans suggest it: a couples trailer of the same length typically gives the space to a larger bedroom, kitchen or bath, while a bunk plan fills it with bunk frames, which are light. A band is compared only when both groups have at least 5 plans in it.

04Same line, same length

Length bands still mix makers and price levels. A tighter test: each bunkhouse plan with a published dry weight and length is paired with the couples plan in the same brand and line whose length is nearest, within 2 feet. That gives 144 pairs across 32 lines (a couples plan can be the match for more than one bunkhouse plan). The bunkhouse plan weighs less dry in 86 pairs, more in 57 and the same in 1; the median difference is −105 lb (n=144). Where both GVWRs are printed, the median GVWR difference is −100 lb (n=141). Where the bunkhouse plan publishes its sleeps, it sleeps a median 4 more people than its couples match (n=139).

A few of the pairs, in brand and line order:

05Where the beds do cost: length

The extra beds are paid for in feet, and the feet carry the weight. Bunkhouse plans that sleep more are longer, and longer plans weigh more:

So the useful question for a family is not only “how much does a bunkhouse add?” but “how long a trailer can I tow and store?” At a given length, choosing bunks over a couples layout does not, on the published figures, make the trailer heavier.

06Reading these numbers

Dry weight is the maker’s base-unit figure; options, batteries, water and gear add to it, and GVWR is the limit that matters when loaded. A family of six or eight also tends to carry more gear than a couple, so a bunkhouse that leaves the factory lighter can still leave home heavier. Check cargo capacity where the maker prints it, and the weight label on the actual trailer. See how much a camper trailer weighs, the lightest bunkhouse trailers by GVWR and tow match.
