01 What makes the 2023 38BHDS different

The Jay Flight 38BHDS is one of Jayco's Jay Flight travel trailers, the mass-market nameplate and the volume seller in Jayco's towable range. This page covers one model year of it — the 2023 38BHDS, exactly as Jayco published it — because the numbers that decide whether your truck can pull this trailer are not the same from one year to the next. Jayco publishes it at 8' 0" wide closed and 11' 0" with the slide-outs run out for the 2023 model year, which is the measurement that matters for a site pitch as well as for the road.

For the 2023 model year Jayco published a 10,750-pound GVWR on a 8,150-pound dry weight, 2,600 pounds of published cargo capacity, a 1,045-pound dry tongue weight. That dry tongue is 13% of the dry weight, inside the 10–15% band conventionally quoted for a bumper-pull trailer. Tongue weight is not fixed — it moves with how the trailer is loaded, and weight added ahead of the axles raises it. A tongue load in that range wants a weight-distribution hitch, and the tow vehicle's tongue-weight limit is a separate number from its trailer-weight limit — check the loaded tongue against the hitch receiver's rating and the vehicle's payload, not against the tow rating alone. The 2023 trailer left the factory on ST225/75R15'E' tyres; the load range in that code is part of the axle rating and a replacement set has to match it.

Against the 2021 build of the same floorplan, 8 published fields moved. The full comparison is in section 02, and it is drawn from two separate verified factory records rather than from one record and an assumption about the other.

A 2023 trailer is 3 model years old as of 2026, which puts it squarely in used-buyer territory. Section 05 sets out what to inspect on a travel trailer of this age — tyre date codes, roof and seam sealant, slide seals, and the soft-floor and delamination checks that separate a tidy coach from an expensive one.

How the 38BHDS differs from the other 122 Jay Flight floorplans. Most distinctive first. Sibling pages may cover other model years than this one (2018–2023). How these ranks are worked out.

  • Cargo capacity, 2,600 lb: eighth-largest of 123, between the 29RLDS and 40FKDS (2,490 lb) and the 29RKS (2,605 lb).

Next to the 38FDDS (2018–2019 page), the nearest heavier floorplan by dry weight, the 38BHDS is 130 lb lighter by dry weight, has a GVWR 200 lb lower, has 70 lb less cargo capacity, has a dry tongue weight 60 lb lighter, is 2 in longer and has a fresh tank 6 gal smaller; the two publish the same interior height, grey tank and black tank.

Specifications by model year

This floorplan has a published factory record for 4 model years here, 2018 to 2023. The specification does not hold still: GVWR runs from 10,750 lb (2023) to 10,950 lb (2021); dry weight runs from 7,960 lb (2018) to 8,440 lb (2021); dry tongue weight runs from 855 lb (2018) to 1,135 lb (2021). The published sleeping capacity changes across the years: 8-10 in 2018, 6 - 14 in 2019, 8-10 in 2021, up to 7 in 2023. Each year’s complete record is printed separately below, carrying only that year’s own published figures and source. Nothing is copied across from a neighbouring year.

Every row is that model year’s own record from Jayco’s model page or factory brochure for that year, as the source line for each year names. The figures in the tow-critical placard at the top of this page are the 2023 record from the source this catalogue originally profiled. On the weights, overall length and tire size, that record and Jayco’s own 2023 model page agree on every field both of them publish. Exterior height is not compared: Jayco publishes a bare height, a with-A/C height and a with-2nd-A/C height, and the single height row carried here cannot be matched to one of them, so no claim is made either way.

What changed for the 2018 model year

2018 is the earliest model year of the 38BHDS on this site, so there is no earlier record to set it against. Section 01 compares it with 2019.

Source for 2018. Specifications reflect the 2018 model year as published by Jayco on its own 2018 factory brochure for this product line, and are dry factory figures for a base unit. Options, dealer-installed equipment and cargo all add weight. A travel trailer puts its tongue load on the tow vehicle's hitch and through its rear axle, so the loaded tongue must be checked against the receiver's rating and the vehicle's payload, not against its tow rating. Dry weight plus cargo capacity ties out exactly to the published GVWR for this model year. CamperTrailers.com publishes verified manufacturer data and is not affiliated with Jayco, Inc.

Federal tire recalls naming this size. NHTSA’s recall file names ST225/75R15 in 2 tire recalls: 14T015000 (Dynamic Tire Corp., 2014; make TOWMAX STR; model ST); 17T014000 (Triangle Tire USA, 2017; make TRIANGLE; model TR643). A tire recall covers only the brands, lines and DOT date codes it lists, and this page does not know which brand of tire this trailer was built with, so read the brand and DOT code on your own sidewalls before relying on this list. Only 242 of NHTSA’s 788 tire recalls name a size in their summary, so a size with no match is not a clean record (NHTSA recall file, read 12 Oct 2026).

The 2021 figures on this page come from Jayco's own 2021 brochure, which carries no column for them at all; the 2023 figures come from its 2023 model page, which does. That is a difference between two kinds of factory document rather than a change Jayco made to the trailer, so this page does not report it as one and does not count it in the figure above.

GVWR changed for 2023

GVWR was 10,950 for 2021 and is 10,750 for 2023 (-200 lb). Both figures are the manufacturer's own for their year.

Dry tongue weight changed for 2023

Dry tongue weight was 1,135 for 2021 and is 1,045 for 2023 (-90 lb). Both figures are the manufacturer's own for their year.

Sleeps changed for 2023

Sleeps was 8-10 for 2021 and is up to 7 for 2023. Both figures are the manufacturer's own for their year.

Where these numbers come from

Every figure on this page is read from Jayco's own 2023 model page for the 38BHDS — one source, one model year, no blending. The all-years parent page sets this year beside every other model year we hold, and where the record this catalogue originally profiled disagrees with Jayco's own model page, both figures are published there and neither is adjusted.

Fields Jayco does not publish for 2023

For this model year the factory record omits: Propane Unit (lbs) (Optional). Those rows read “Not published” on this page. They are deliberately not filled in from an adjacent model year — a neighbouring year's figure is an inference about this one, not a measurement of it.

04 Buying a 2023 38BHDS at 3 model years old

Tyres are the first thing to age out

RV tyres are usually replaced on age rather than tread, at roughly five to seven years from the DOT date code on the sidewall. On a 3-year-old trailer the originals (ST225/75R15'E') may still be fitted — read the four-digit date code, not the tread.

Roof and seam sealant is on a service interval

Travel trailers rely on sealant at every roof penetration, along the front cap and around every window and marker light. Inspection is typically annual and re-sealing every few years; ask for the service records rather than assuming.

Weigh it before you tow it

Every weight on this page is a DRY factory figure for the 2023 model year. A used trailer carries its previous owner's additions, and a travel trailer puts its tongue load on the tow vehicle's hitch and through its rear axle. Weigh the loaded rig at a public scale and check it against the tow vehicle's payload, rear-axle and hitch ratings.

NHTSA holds 25 recall campaigns and 75 owner complaints (model years 2005 on) against the Jay Flight line (a recall and a complaint are not the same thing).

What to look at on a used one. Across the 75 complaints filed on this line the most-reported components are equipment (43%), unknown or other (13%) and electrical system (11%).

Recall coverage here is not complete, and complaints are owners’ unverified reports (how this record is built). Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the Jay Flight line page.
