01 What makes it unique
The Sandstorm 2800 leaves Forest River's factory at 10,419 lbs dry, with a published GVWR of 15,719 lbs and 5,300 lbs of cargo capacity between the two. Cargo capacity is 34% of the loaded rating, and Forest River's own definition is worth reading before you plan against it: cargo capacity is what remains for fresh water, gear, food, batteries and every dealer-installed accessory. Fresh water alone is 8.3 lb per gallon, so filling this trailer's 150-gallon fresh tank spends 1,245 lbs of that 5,300 lbs before anything else is loaded.
Pin weight is 2,265 lbs, 22% of the dry weight as published; it rises as the trailer is loaded and comes off the truck’s payload, not its towing rating, so check it against the payload on your own door sticker (pin weight and payload).
Off hookups: 137 gallons of grey and black capacity against 150 gallons of fresh water, so fresh and waste run out at roughly the same rate (tank sizes by length).
Against the rest of the Sandstorm fifth-wheel roster this is the 2nd of 7 fifth wheels by dry weight, in a line that runs from 9,459 lbs to 15,749 lbs. It sits in the lighter third of the line.
Plan the tow on loaded weight, not the 10,419 lbs dry figure: half the published cargo capacity brings this plan to about 13,069 lbs, and the published GVWR of 15,719 lbs is the limit (how to read trailer weights).
Forest River’s line listing and this floorplan’s own factory page agree on all 4 shared figures. Dry weight plus cargo capacity equals the published GVWR exactly. A missing row means Forest River does not publish that figure (how figures are verified).
Forest River publishes no floorplan description for this plan in the channel this page is built from - only the numeric specification block. Rather than describe a layout from the floorplan code, which would be a guess dressed as a fact, this page carries what the factory publishes and says where it stops. 2800 is a Sandstorm designation and this site does not decode it into a layout claim.
How the 2800 differs from the other six Sandstorm fifth wheels. Most distinctive first. How these ranks are worked out.
- Dry weight, 10,419 lb: second-lightest of seven, between the 2710 (9,459 lb) and the 3300 (10,879 lb).

- Pin weight, 2,265 lb: second-lightest of seven, between the 2710 (2,165 lb) and the 3300 (2,555 lb).
- Pin weight as a share of dry weight, 21.7%: second-smallest of seven, between the 4114GX (21.3%) and the 2710 (22.9%).
- Cargo capacity as a share of GVWR, 33.7%: third-largest of seven, between the 4017GX (25.4%) and the 3300 (34.3%).
- Length, 32 ft 3 in: shortest of seven, level with the 2710; next is the 3300 (36 ft 10 in).
- Grey tank, 97 gal: smallest of seven, level with the 2710; next are the 3217GX, 3513GX and two others (120 gal).
- Exterior height, 13 ft 5 in: lowest of seven, level with the 2710 and 4114GX; next are the 3217GX, 3300 and two others (13 ft 6 in).
- Cargo capacity, 5,300 lb: shared with the 2710; of seven, three smaller and two larger, nearest the 4114GX (5,251 lb) and the 4017GX (5,326 lb).
Next to the 2710, the nearest lighter floorplan by dry weight, the 2800 is 960 lb heavier by dry weight, has a GVWR 960 lb higher and has a pin weight 100 lb heavier; the two publish the same cargo capacity, length, exterior height, fresh tank, grey tank and black tank.
Next to the 3300, the nearest heavier floorplan by dry weight, the 2800 is 460 lb lighter by dry weight, has a GVWR 836 lb lower, has 376 lb less cargo capacity, has a pin weight 290 lb lighter, is 4 ft 7 in shorter, stands 1 in lower and has a grey tank 35 gal smaller; the two publish the same fresh tank and black tank.

Towing it
Check your vehicle. Enter the ratings from your owner’s manual and the door-pillar placard.
Compares your figures with this page’s published GVWR (15,719 lb) and the upper loaded pin estimate (3,930 lb, a rule of thumb). Your vehicle’s placard and the trailer’s own weight label govern.
Loaded range: 15–25% of GVWR on the pin, a rule of thumb, not a measurement of this unit. No truck ratings or hitch classes (why; NHTSA, DOT HS 809 433).
The 2027 model year, as Forest River lists it
Forest River’s own floorplan page lists the 2027 Sandstorm / Stealth / Shockwave 2800 with the figures below (read 22 Oct 2026). They are that year’s record. The specifications above are the 2026 record; the two are not merged, and neither fills a gap in the other. Every weight, dimension and tank figure in it matches the 2026 record above. Unloaded weight plus cargo capacity equals the 2027 GVWR exactly.

03 The Sandstorm floorplan family
Sandstorm is a toy-hauler roster published under three badges at once, and the first useful thing to know about it is that Sandstorm, Stealth and Shockwave are the same sixteen trailers. Not similar - the same floorplan codes, the same dry weights, the same cargo capacities, the same tanks, checked field by field. So a shopper cross-shopping the three badges is cross-shopping one product, and the choice between them is a dealer question rather than a trailer question. Within that roster there are two real classes. Five plans are travel trailers, 7,439 to 9,399 lb dry with 1,155 to 1,855 lb on the tongue. Seven are fifth wheels, 9,459 to 15,749 lb dry with 2,165 to 3,765 lb on the pin. The lightest fifth wheel outweighs the heaviest bumper pull, so the two halves do not overlap and no plan here is a borderline call. Cargo capacity runs 3,281 to 5,676 lb on the fifth wheels and 3,771 to 5,300 lb on the travel trailers - the bumper pulls give up very little payload, which is unusual and is the reason to read the table rather than assume the fifth wheels carry more.

Forest River publishes this roster three times, as Sandstorm, as Stealth and as Shockwave, on three separate factory line pages with their own per-plan detail pages. All three publish the same sixteen floorplan codes and the same specifications: 295 non-null published fields on each side, GVWR on 15 of 16 on each side, and all 15 tie out exactly against dry weight plus cargo capacity. Compared field by field across all sixteen plans, Stealth and Sandstorm differ in nothing at all, and Shockwave differs in one character - it writes the 2215 awning as 18 where the other two write 18 feet. This site catalogues that as one trailer under one set of pages carrying all three names, rather than publishing three near-identical page sets; the Sandstorm badge is used for the page addresses because the three are indistinguishable on every measurable axis and something had to break the tie. Twelve of the sixteen plans are profiled. The other four are marked dealer stock only by the factory and are catalogued with their weights instead. Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not published in this channel, and neither is garage length or fuel-station capacity - which on a toy hauler are the two figures buyers most want, so their absence is stated here rather than filled with an estimate.
04 Notes on this floorplan
What Forest River does not publish for this line
Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not in Forest River’s specification channel for Sandstorm, so this page does not publish them and does not estimate them (how figures are verified).
Awning size is not published for this floorplan
Forest River publishes an awning size for some Sandstorm floorplans and not for this one. The row reads as unpublished rather than being filled from a neighbouring plan in the same roster.
Weigh it before you tow it
Forest River calls its unloaded weight an estimated average for a standard build, and options and dealer add-ons change it, so weigh your own trailer loaded the way you travel (how figures are verified).
05 How it compares
9,459 lbs dry against this plan's 10,419 lbs, a difference of 960 lbs.
10,879 lbs dry, 460 lbs more than this plan, and 5,676 lbs of cargo capacity against this one's 5,300 lbs.
5,676 lbs of cargo capacity, the highest of the 7 Sandstorm fifth wheels profiled here. If payload rather than length is the binding constraint, that is the plan to compare against.
06 Loading it for a trip
A full 150-gallon fresh tank is about 1,245 lb of water (water counts as cargo: 49 CFR 571.120 S10.4.2), 23% of the 2800’s 5,300 lb cargo capacity, leaving 4,055 lb. Across 7 Sandstorm fifth-wheel floorplans the water share runs 22% to 38%, and 4 give up more than this one. Nearest on that share: Sandstorm 4017GX at 23% and Sandstorm 2710 at 23%. Your own unit’s figure is on the label inside its entry door (49 CFR 571.120 S10.4.3).
07 Where this floorplan sits
Closest sibling: the Sandstorm 2710, nearest on the published figures. It differs on 3 of the 8 fields both publish (this plan first): dry weight 10,419 lb vs 9,459 lb; GVWR 15,719 lb vs 14,759 lb; hitch weight 2,265 lb vs 2,165 lb. They match on length, cargo capacity, fresh tank, grey tank and black tank.

11 NHTSA safety record
NHTSA holds 12 recall campaigns and 21 owner complaints (model years 2005 on) against the Sandstorm line (a recall and a complaint are not the same thing).
What to look at on a used one. Across the 21 complaints filed on this line the most-reported components are structure (29%), tires (14%) and unknown or other (14%).
Recall coverage here is not complete, and complaints are owners’ unverified reports (how this record is built). Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the Sandstorm line page.
