01 What makes it unique

The Sandstorm 4017GX has 5,326 lbs of cargo capacity between 15,674 lbs dry and its 21,000 lbs GVWR, 25% of that rating; filling its 150-gallon fresh tank at 8.3 lb a gallon uses 1,245 lbs of it (how to read trailer weights).

Pin weight is 3,765 lbs, 24% of the dry weight as published; it rises as the trailer is loaded and comes off the truck’s payload, not its towing rating, so check it against the payload on your own door sticker (pin weight and payload).

Off hookups: 200 gallons of grey and black capacity against 150 gallons of fresh water, so fresh water runs out first (tank sizes by length).

Against the rest of the Sandstorm fifth-wheel roster this is the 6th of 7 fifth wheels by dry weight, in a line that runs from 9,459 lbs to 15,749 lbs. It sits in the heavier third of the line.

Plan the tow on loaded weight, not the 15,674 lbs dry figure: half the published cargo capacity brings this plan to about 18,337 lbs, and the published GVWR of 21,000 lbs is the limit (how to read trailer weights).

Forest River’s line listing and this floorplan’s own factory page agree on all 4 shared figures. Dry weight plus cargo capacity equals the published GVWR exactly. A missing row means Forest River does not publish that figure (how figures are verified).

Forest River publishes no floorplan description for this plan in the channel this page is built from - only the numeric specification block. Rather than describe a layout from the floorplan code, which would be a guess dressed as a fact, this page carries what the factory publishes and says where it stops. 4017GX is a Sandstorm designation and this site does not decode it into a layout claim.

How the 4017GX differs from the other six Sandstorm fifth wheels. Most distinctive first. How these ranks are worked out.

  • Pin weight, 3,765 lb: heaviest of seven; next is the 4114GX (3,360 lb).
  • Dry weight, 15,674 lb: second-heaviest of seven, between the 3513GX (13,969 lb) and the 4114GX (15,749 lb).
  • Cargo capacity, 5,326 lb: second-largest of seven, between the 2710 and 2800 (5,300 lb) and the 3300 (5,676 lb).
  • Pin weight as a share of dry weight, 24%: second-largest of seven, between the 3300 (23.5%) and the 3217GX (24.1%).
  • Length, 45 ft: second-longest of seven, between the 3513GX (40 ft 5 in) and the 4114GX (45 ft 11 in).
  • Cargo capacity as a share of GVWR, 25.4%: fourth-smallest of seven, between the 4114GX (25%) and the 2800 (33.7%).
  • GVWR, 21,000 lb: highest of seven, level with the 4114GX; next is the 3513GX (17,250 lb).
  • Black tank, 80 gal: largest of seven, level with the 3513GX; next are the 2710, 2800 and two others (40 gal).

Next to the 3513GX, the nearest lighter floorplan by dry weight, the 4017GX is 1,705 lb heavier by dry weight, has a GVWR 3,750 lb higher, has 2,045 lb more cargo capacity, has a pin weight 515 lb heavier and is 4 ft 7 in longer; the two publish the same exterior height, fresh tank, grey tank and black tank.

Next to the 4114GX, the nearest heavier floorplan by dry weight, the 4017GX is 75 lb lighter by dry weight, has 75 lb more cargo capacity, has a pin weight 405 lb heavier, is 11 in shorter, stands 1 in taller and has a black tank 48 gal larger; the two publish the same GVWR, fresh tank and grey tank.

Loaded pin weight, rule of thumb3,765–5,250 lb
In-bed fifth-wheel hitch rating needed21,000 lb towed / 5,250 lb pin
Payload check. Budget loaded, not dry: subtract the loaded range, every passenger and the bed and cab load from the payload on your tow vehicle’s door-pillar placard (49 CFR 571.110 S4.3).

Check your vehicle. Enter the ratings from your owner’s manual and the door-pillar placard.

Compares your figures with this page’s published GVWR (21,000 lb) and the upper loaded pin estimate (5,250 lb, a rule of thumb). Your vehicle’s placard and the trailer’s own weight label govern.

Loaded range: 15–25% of GVWR on the pin, a rule of thumb, not a measurement of this unit. No truck ratings or hitch classes (why; NHTSA, DOT HS 809 433). The range starts at the published figure, because loaded is never lighter than that.

The 2027 model year, as Forest River lists it

Forest River’s own floorplan page lists the 2027 Sandstorm / Stealth / Shockwave 4017GX with the figures below (read 22 Oct 2026). They are that year’s record. The specifications above are the 2026 record; the two are not merged, and neither fills a gap in the other. Every weight, dimension and tank figure in it matches the 2026 record above. Unloaded weight plus cargo capacity equals the 2027 GVWR exactly.

03 The Sandstorm floorplan family

Sandstorm is a toy-hauler roster published under three badges at once, and the first useful thing to know about it is that Sandstorm, Stealth and Shockwave are the same sixteen trailers. Not similar - the same floorplan codes, the same dry weights, the same cargo capacities, the same tanks, checked field by field. So a shopper cross-shopping the three badges is cross-shopping one product, and the choice between them is a dealer question rather than a trailer question. Within that roster there are two real classes. Five plans are travel trailers, 7,439 to 9,399 lb dry with 1,155 to 1,855 lb on the tongue. Seven are fifth wheels, 9,459 to 15,749 lb dry with 2,165 to 3,765 lb on the pin. The lightest fifth wheel outweighs the heaviest bumper pull, so the two halves do not overlap and no plan here is a borderline call. Cargo capacity runs 3,281 to 5,676 lb on the fifth wheels and 3,771 to 5,300 lb on the travel trailers - the bumper pulls give up very little payload, which is unusual and is the reason to read the table rather than assume the fifth wheels carry more.

Forest River publishes this roster three times, as Sandstorm, as Stealth and as Shockwave, on three separate factory line pages with their own per-plan detail pages. All three publish the same sixteen floorplan codes and the same specifications: 295 non-null published fields on each side, GVWR on 15 of 16 on each side, and all 15 tie out exactly against dry weight plus cargo capacity. Compared field by field across all sixteen plans, Stealth and Sandstorm differ in nothing at all, and Shockwave differs in one character - it writes the 2215 awning as 18 where the other two write 18 feet. This site catalogues that as one trailer under one set of pages carrying all three names, rather than publishing three near-identical page sets; the Sandstorm badge is used for the page addresses because the three are indistinguishable on every measurable axis and something had to break the tie. Twelve of the sixteen plans are profiled. The other four are marked dealer stock only by the factory and are catalogued with their weights instead. Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not published in this channel, and neither is garage length or fuel-station capacity - which on a toy hauler are the two figures buyers most want, so their absence is stated here rather than filled with an estimate.

04 Notes on this floorplan

What Forest River does not publish for this line

Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not in Forest River’s specification channel for Sandstorm, so this page does not publish them and does not estimate them (how figures are verified).

Weigh it before you tow it

Forest River calls its unloaded weight an estimated average for a standard build, and options and dealer add-ons change it, so weigh your own trailer loaded the way you travel (how figures are verified).

05 How it compares

Lighter
Sandstorm 3513GX

13,969 lbs dry against this plan's 15,674 lbs, a difference of 1,705 lbs.

Heavier
Sandstorm 4114GX

15,749 lbs dry, 75 lbs more than this plan, and 5,251 lbs of cargo capacity against this one's 5,326 lbs.

Most cargo in the line
Sandstorm 3300

5,676 lbs of cargo capacity, the highest of the 7 Sandstorm fifth wheels profiled here. If payload rather than length is the binding constraint, that is the plan to compare against.

06 Loading it for a trip

A full 150-gallon fresh tank is about 1,245 lb of water (water counts as cargo: 49 CFR 571.120 S10.4.2), 23% of the 4017GX’s 5,326 lb cargo capacity, leaving 4,081 lb. Across 7 Sandstorm fifth-wheel floorplans the water share runs 22% to 38%, and 5 give up more than this one. Nearest on that share: Sandstorm 3300 at 22% and Sandstorm 2710 at 23%. Your own unit’s figure is on the label inside its entry door (49 CFR 571.120 S10.4.3).

11 NHTSA safety record

NHTSA holds 12 recall campaigns and 21 owner complaints (model years 2005 on) against the Sandstorm line (a recall and a complaint are not the same thing).

What to look at on a used one. Across the 21 complaints filed on this line the most-reported components are structure (29%), tires (14%) and unknown or other (14%).

Recall coverage here is not complete, and complaints are owners’ unverified reports (how this record is built). Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the Sandstorm line page.
