01 What makes the 2024 236TH different

The Jay Flight 236TH is one of Jayco's Jay Flight travel trailers, the mass-market nameplate and the volume seller in Jayco's towable range. This page covers one model year of it — the 2024 236TH, exactly as Jayco published it — because the numbers that decide whether your truck can pull this trailer are not the same from one year to the next.

For the 2024 model year Jayco published a 7,500-pound GVWR on a 5,060-pound dry weight, 2,440 pounds of published cargo capacity, a 885-pound dry tongue weight. That dry tongue is 17% of the dry weight, above the 10–15% band conventionally quoted for a bumper-pull trailer. Tongue weight is not fixed — it moves with how the trailer is loaded, and weight added ahead of the axles raises it. A tongue load in that range wants a weight-distribution hitch, and the tow vehicle's tongue-weight limit is a separate number from its trailer-weight limit — check the loaded tongue against the hitch receiver's rating and the vehicle's payload, not against the tow rating alone. The 2024 trailer left the factory on ST205/75R14'D' tyres; the load range in that code is part of the axle rating and a replacement set has to match it.

Against the 2023 build of the same floorplan, 5 published fields moved. The full comparison is in section 02, and it is drawn from two separate verified factory records rather than from one record and an assumption about the other.

A 2024 trailer is close to current as of 2026, but section 05 still applies: check it against its build date rather than its model year. Jayco commonly builds a model year well before the calendar year turns, and the tyre date codes have to be read against the build month, not the badge.

Specifications by model year

This floorplan has a verified factory record for 3 model years here, 2021 to 2024, and the specification does not hold still. Across those years dry weight ranges from 4,890 lb in 2021 to 5,060 lb in 2024, a spread of 170 lb; dry tongue weight ranges from 830 lb in 2021 to 885 lb in 2024, a spread of 55 lb. That is why each model year has its own page below, carrying only its own published figures. Nothing on a year page is copied across from a neighbouring year.

Every row is that model year’s own record from Jayco’s model page for that year. One further model year is deliberately not published here: 2025 — Jayco’s own 2025 model page publishes an unloaded weight of 5,060 lb and a cargo capacity of 2,715 lb, which sum to 7,775 lb, against a published GVWR of 7,995 lb on that same page — a 220 lb gap. Two figures on one factory page disagree about a tow-safety number, so no page is built for that year and neither figure is chosen. The record exists, and it is withheld because it cannot be published honestly rather than because it is missing. The figures in the tow-critical placard at the top of this page are the 2024 record from the source this catalogue originally profiled. On the weights, overall length and tire size, that record and Jayco’s own 2024 model page agree on every field both of them publish. Exterior height is not compared: Jayco publishes a bare height, a with-A/C height and a with-2nd-A/C height, and the single height row carried here cannot be matched to one of them, so no claim is made either way.

Published tank capacities on one scale. A full fresh tank is about 434 lbs of water — roughly 18% of this plan’s 2,440 lb cargo capacity, before you load anything else.

These graphics are generated from the same verified record that builds the table above, and are published under this site’s own licence — nothing here is traced from, or derived from, a manufacturer drawing or photo. Where a figure is not published for this plan, the graphic that would need it is omitted rather than estimated. The full record is in the published dataset.

What it takes to tow this

Built from this floorplan’s verified weights. We publish the trailer side only.

Minimum tow rating your vehicle needs7,500 lb
Published dry tongue weight885 lb
Loaded tongue weight, typical range885–1,125 lb
Minimum receiver hitch capacity7,500 lb towed / 1,125 lb tongue
The tongue weight above is dry. It is the figure the manufacturer publishes for an empty trailer. Loaded — with water, propane, batteries and your gear — it runs higher, which is why the range row uses loaded weight. Sizing your truck off the dry number under-budgets your payload.
The arithmetic that actually binds. Open your driver’s door and read the payload figure on the yellow-and-white sticker — that number is specific to your truck as built. Subtract from it: loaded tongue weight (use the range above), every passenger, everything in the bed and cab, and the weight-distributing hitch itself where one is used. What is left is your margin. Payload, not tow rating, is what most half-ton owners run out of first.

We do not publish tow ratings for specific trucks. A single model can vary by thousands of pounds depending on engine, axle ratio, cab, drivetrain and package — the only authoritative figure is the one on your own door jamb. Loaded tongue percentages are industry convention for travel trailers (10–15% of loaded weight), not a measurement of this unit. Hitch classes are not used here as a rating: SAE J684 covers trailers to 10,000 lb GVWR and does not define Class V, and capacity boundaries differ between manufacturers — read the rating stamped on your hitch. On this plan the convention band’s low end fell below the published dry figure, so the range starts at the published dry weight instead — loaded is never lighter than dry.

03 What changed for the 2024 model year

Jayco changed 5 of the published fields between the 2023 and 2024 236TH. Every figure in both columns is that model year's own factory record — nothing here is carried across from the other year.

Dry tongue weight changed for 2024

Dry tongue weight was 845 for 2023 and is 885 for 2024 (+40 lb). Both figures are the manufacturer's own for their year.

Where these numbers come from

Every figure on this page is read from Jayco's own 2024 model page for the 236TH — one source, one model year, no blending. The all-years parent page sets this year beside every other model year we hold, and where the record this catalogue originally profiled disagrees with Jayco's own model page, both figures are published there and neither is adjusted.

Fields Jayco does not publish for 2024

For this model year the factory record omits: Exterior Width (with slides out). Those rows read “Not published” on this page. They are deliberately not filled in from an adjacent model year — a neighbouring year's figure is an inference about this one, not a measurement of it.

04 Buying a 2024 236TH at 2 model years old

Tyres are the first thing to age out

RV tyres are usually replaced on age rather than tread, at roughly five to seven years from the DOT date code on the sidewall. On a 2-year-old trailer the originals (ST205/75R14'D') may still be fitted — read the four-digit date code, not the tread.

Roof and seam sealant is on a service interval

Travel trailers rely on sealant at every roof penetration, along the front cap and around every window and marker light. Inspection is typically annual and re-sealing every few years; ask for the service records rather than assuming.

Weigh it before you tow it

Every weight on this page is a DRY factory figure for the 2024 model year. A used trailer carries its previous owner's additions, and a travel trailer puts its tongue load on the tow vehicle's hitch and through its rear axle. Weigh the loaded rig at a public scale and check it against the tow vehicle's payload, rear-axle and hitch ratings.

06 Loading it for a trip

This floorplan carries its water comfortably. A full 52-gallon fresh tank is roughly 18% of the 2,440-pound cargo capacity, leaving the 236TH with a usable gear budget even when you tow full.

Weight budgetFigureWhat it means
Cargo capacity as published (CCC)2,440 lbEverything you add: gear, water, propane, batteries, food, people’s belongings.
Fresh tank filled (52 gal × 8.34 lb)−434 lbWater is the heaviest thing most owners add, and it is added first.
Cargo budget left with a full fresh tank2,006 lb18% of this plan’s capacity is spent before a single bag is loaded.
Per sleeping position, water aboard502 lbA rough share of what is left across the 4 berths this plan sleeps.

The published dry tongue weight of 885 pounds is 17% of the 5,060-pound dry weight — at or above the top of the usual 10–15% band before you load anything. A nose-heavy dry figure eats truck payload directly, so budget the hitch load against your door-jamb sticker rather than against the tow rating.

Nothing above changes the ceiling. Loaded to its 7,500-pound GVWR the 236TH is towing 2,440 pounds more than its 5,060-pound dry figure, and that is the number your vehicle has to be rated for — not the brochure weight.

Tank balance is generous here: 52 gallons of fresh against 39 grey and 39 black, so waste capacity keeps pace with supply and the fresh tank is the constraint that ends a dry stay.

07 Where this floorplan sits

Ranked by GVWR, the 236TH sits 59 of 117 in the Jay Flight line: 7,500 pounds against a line that runs from 3,500 to 14,500 pounds. That position is the useful thing to know, because the plans immediately either side of it are the real alternatives.

Either side of it in the same line: Jay Flight 235MBHW is 200 pounds lighter at 7,300 lb GVWR; and Jay Flight 240RBSW matches it exactly at 7,500 lb GVWR.

2 other Jay Flight plans share this floorplan’s 7,500 lb GVWR, so the ranking above separates plans that tow to the same ceiling. On a shared chassis the figure that actually differs between them is cargo capacity and where the weight sits, not the rating.

Against the 236TH: the Hideout 212RKS is 3 ft shorter and sleeps 1 fewer; the Jay Feather 22BH sleeps 3 more. Those are differences in the published numbers only — what they cost, how they are built and how they live are separate questions each of those pages answers on its own terms.

Those are the nearest travel trailers from other lines by weight — one per line, picked by proximity on that figure and nothing else. They are listed so the same tow vehicle can be checked against real alternatives, not because they are equivalent inside; layout, build and price diverge sharply across that group.

For scale, the Jay Flight floorplans profiled here run 2,450 to 12,430 pounds dry and 16 to 42 feet of exterior length across 117 plans. Where a floorplan falls in that spread usually says more about which vehicle can tow it, and which site it fits, than the layout name does.

Every profiled floorplan in this line, with the full weight table, is on the Jay Flight line hub.

08 Common questions about the 236TH

How much does the 236TH weigh?

It leaves the factory at 5,060 pounds dry, and its manufacturer-set loaded ceiling (GVWR) is 7,500 pounds. Real towing weight lands between the two and depends entirely on what you load. Use the GVWR when matching a tow vehicle; the dry figure is only useful for comparing floorplans against each other.

How much can the 236TH carry?

Cargo carrying capacity is 2,440 pounds. That is the whole budget: water, propane, batteries, gear and everything you bring. Filling the 52-gallon fresh tank uses about 434 pounds of that.

What is the tongue weight of the 236TH?

The published dry tongue weight is 885 pounds. It is measured empty; loaded, it runs higher, and it comes out of your tow vehicle’s payload rather than its tow rating.

What size tow vehicle does the 236TH need?

Your vehicle needs a tow rating of at least 7,500 pounds — this floorplan’s GVWR — and enough payload left over for the hitch load, passengers and anything in the bed. This site does not publish tow ratings for specific vehicles, because one truck model varies by thousands of pounds across engine, axle ratio, cab and package. The figure that governs is the payload sticker on your own door jamb.

How many people does the 236TH sleep?

It is rated to sleep 4. Rated sleeping positions include convertible furniture, so count the beds against how you actually travel rather than against the number.

What are the tank capacities on the 236TH?

Fresh 52 gallons, grey 39 gallons, black 39 gallons. Tank sizes set how long the floorplan can sit away from hookups, and the smallest of the three is what ends the stay.

How long is the 236TH?

Exterior length is 28' 4". Measure against your site length and your storage before committing — the exterior figure is the one that has to fit, and it includes the tongue or pin box.

Every figure in these answers is read from this page’s verified specification table. Where the manufacturer publishes nothing, the question is not answered rather than estimated.

09 What this page publishes, and what it does not

This catalog tracks 18 specification fields per floorplan. Named sources publish 13 of them for the 236TH. The rest are not shown, because the alternative is reading a figure across from a sibling floorplan or from what the segment usually does — and a number nobody published is worth less than an admitted gap.

Not published for this floorplan: slide count, axle count, awning, refrigerator, air conditioning. If you find one of these in a manufacturer document for this plan, it belongs on this page.

The completeness figure at the foot of this page (95%) measures the same thing on the full field set: it is a measurement of how much this floorplan’s manufacturer publishes, not of how much research went into the page.

How every figure here was sourced and checked is set out on the methodology page.

11 NHTSA safety record

This floorplan belongs to the Jay Flight line, and NHTSA holds 25 recall campaigns and 80 owner complaints against that line. They are separate records and are not added together — a recall is a manufacturer-confirmed defect with a remedy; a complaint is one owner’s account, which NHTSA does not verify.

What to look at on a used one. Across the 80 complaints filed on this line the most-reported components are equipment (42%), unknown or other (12%) and structure (11%). That is where owners of this family have had trouble, so it is where an inspection is worth the time.

Recall coverage is not complete — our harvest of NHTSA’s recall API ran 1,556 queries, of which 0 failed and 242 returned an explicit zero. A line can still be under-reported where NHTSA files a roster under a parent name, or where a match rests on the wording of the recall rather than its model field. Complaints come from the complete bulk file but are unverified and self-selected: a high count tracks how many units a line sold at least as much as how well it was built. Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the Jay Flight line page.
