01 What makes it unique
The Salem Villa 42DL leaves Forest River's factory at 12,719 lbs dry with 1,136 lbs of cargo capacity. Forest River publishes no GVWR for this line, so the loaded rating is not quoted on this page and is not computed from the other two figures. What the cargo number covers is defined by the factory: fresh water, gear, food, batteries and every dealer-installed accessory come out of it. Fresh water is 8.3 lb per gallon, so filling the 39-gallon fresh tank spends 324 lbs of the 1,136 lbs before anything else goes in.
Tongue weight is 1,855 lbs, 15% of the dry weight as published; it rises as the trailer is loaded and counts against the tow vehicle’s tongue-weight and payload limits (tongue weight by size).
Off hookups: 120 gallons of grey and black capacity against 39 gallons of fresh water, so fresh water runs out first (tank sizes by length).
Against the rest of the Salem Villa roster this is the 8th of 12 floorplans by dry weight, in a line that runs from 9,234 lbs to 14,404 lbs. It sits in the heavier third of the line.
Plan the tow on loaded weight, not the 12,719 lbs dry figure: half the published cargo capacity brings this plan to about 13,287 lbs. Forest River publishes no loaded rating for this line, so the ceiling is the one on the trailer’s own weight label (how to read trailer weights).
Forest River’s line listing and this floorplan’s own factory page agree on all 4 shared figures. No GVWR is published for this line, so dry plus cargo has no rating to check against. A missing row means Forest River does not publish that figure (how figures are verified).
Forest River's own description of this floorplan reads: “The Salem Grand Villa 42DL is another fantastic double loft destination trailer. In addition to the HUGE double loft bonus room for the kids, there is a front queen bedroom for the adults, plus additional sleep options in the living room. The bathroom includes a walk-in shower with a built-in seat, while the island kitchen provides residential appliances and plenty of room for all the cooking essentials.” That is the factory's marketing copy rather than a specification, and nothing in it is treated as a verified field on this page - layout descriptions, sleeping arrangements and feature claims in factory copy are not carried into the spec table unless the factory also publishes them as specifications.
How the 42DL differs from the other eleven Salem Villa floorplans. Most distinctive first. How these ranks are worked out.

- Tongue weight as a share of dry weight, 14.6%: largest of twelve; next is the 353FLFB (14.5%).
- Fresh tank, 39 gal: smallest of twelve; next are the 353FLFB, 40FDEN and nine others (40 gal).
- Cargo capacity, 1,136 lb: second-smallest of twelve, between the 40FDEN (886 lb) and the 42QBQ (1,336 lb).
- Length, 41 ft 10 in: third-shortest of twelve, between the 42FLDL (41 ft 7 in) and the 42QBQ (42 ft 4 in).
- Dry weight, 12,719 lb: fifth-heaviest of twelve, between the 40FKP (12,269 lb) and the 40ZZZ (13,694 lb).
- Exterior height, 13 ft: sixth-lowest of twelve, between the 353FLFB, 40FDEN and three others (12 ft 8 in) and the 42FLDL and 42ICE (13 ft 3 in).
- Grey tank, 80 gal: shared with the 40FKP, 42FLDL and three others; of twelve, four smaller and two larger, nearest the 42DMS (70 gal) and the 40RLB and 40ZZZ (120 gal).
Next to the 40FKP, the nearest lighter floorplan by dry weight, the 42DL is 450 lb heavier by dry weight, has 864 lb less cargo capacity, has a tongue weight 270 lb heavier, is 1 ft 5 in shorter, stands 4 in lower and has a fresh tank 1 gal smaller; the two publish the same grey tank and black tank.
Next to the 40ZZZ, the nearest heavier floorplan by dry weight, the 42DL is 975 lb lighter by dry weight, has 864 lb less cargo capacity, has a tongue weight 375 lb heavier, is 3 ft 2 in shorter, stands 4 in lower, has a fresh tank 1 gal smaller, has a grey tank 40 gal smaller and has a black tank 30 gal smaller.

The 2027 model year, as Forest River lists it
Forest River’s own floorplan page lists the 2027 Salem Villa / Wildwood Lodge 42DL with the figures below (read 22 Oct 2026). They are that year’s record. The specifications above are the 2026 record; the two are not merged, and neither fills a gap in the other. Every weight, dimension and tank figure in it matches the 2026 record above. Forest River publishes no GVWR for this floorplan, so none is shown and none is computed.

03 The Salem Villa floorplan family
These are destination trailers - towed to a seasonal site, levelled, and largely left there - and the numbers only make sense read that way. Fourteen floorplans run 9,234 to 14,404 lb dry against cargo capacity of just 886 to 2,446 lb. On a touring trailer that ratio would be a warning; here it is the design, because the trailer is not being loaded for a trip. What it does mean is that the fit-out a seasonal site accumulates eats the margin quickly, and 886 lb is not much once a screen room, a grill and a season of furniture are aboard. All fourteen are bumper pull, with 1,260 to 1,855 lb on the tongue - for a tow most owners make twice a year, which is why so many of these are delivered rather than towed by the buyer. Forest River splits the roster into a standard group and a Grand group, and the split is real: the six Grand plans start at 12,209 lb dry where the six standard plans start at 9,234 lb. Fresh water is 39 to 40 gallons across the whole roster, which is a plumbed-site number rather than a boondocking one and tells you plainly what these are for.

Forest River publishes this roster under four names on two factory line pages: Salem Villa and Salem Grand Villa on one, Wildwood Lodge and Wildwood Grand Lodge on the other. The two pages carry the same fourteen floorplan codes and the same specifications - 231 non-null published fields on each side, and the only differences across all fourteen plans are five floorplan description sentences that differ because each names its own badge. That is the same east/west twin naming already reflected in this reference's merged Salem and Wildwood hubs, so this line is catalogued once under all four names rather than twice. Forest River publishes no GVWR for any of the fourteen, so the loaded rating row reads not published rather than showing dry weight plus cargo capacity added together - that sum is an inference, not a rating, and a trailer's real limit can sit below it. Twelve plans are profiled; two, 42FK and 42VERANDA, are marked dealer stock only by the factory and are catalogued with their weights instead. Floorplan descriptions are published for 7 of the 14. Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not published in this channel.
04 Notes on this floorplan
What Forest River does not publish for this line
Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not in Forest River’s specification channel for Salem Villa, so this page does not publish them and does not estimate them (how figures are verified).
There is no factory GVWR for this trailer
Forest River publishes dry weight, cargo capacity and tongue weight for every Salem Villa floorplan and publishes no GVWR for any of them. The factory's own glossary defines cargo capacity as GVWR minus UVW, which means the rating can be worked out - and a figure you worked out is not a figure the manufacturer published, so this page does not print one. Use the weight label on the trailer itself, which every Forest River unit carries.
Weigh it before you tow it
Forest River calls its unloaded weight an estimated average for a standard build, and options and dealer add-ons change it, so weigh your own trailer loaded the way you travel (how figures are verified).
05 How it compares
12,269 lbs dry against this plan's 12,719 lbs, a difference of 450 lbs.
13,694 lbs dry, 975 lbs more than this plan, and 2,000 lbs of cargo capacity against this one's 1,136 lbs.
2,400 lbs of cargo capacity, the highest of the 12 Salem Villa floorplans profiled here. If payload rather than length is the binding constraint, that is the plan to compare against.
06 Loading it for a trip
A full 39-gallon fresh tank is about 324 lb of water, 28% of the 42DL’s 1,136 lb cargo capacity, leaving 812 lb. Across 12 Salem Villa floorplans the water share runs 14% to 37%, and 1 gives up more than this one. Nearest on that share: Salem Villa 42QBQ at 25% and Salem Villa 40FDEN at 37%.
07 Where this floorplan sits
Closest sibling: the Salem Villa 42FLDL, nearest on the published figures. It differs on 5 of the 7 fields both publish (this plan first): length 41 ft 10 in vs 41 ft 7 in; dry weight 12,719 lb vs 12,209 lb; cargo capacity 1,136 lb vs 1,511 lb; hitch weight 1,855 lb vs 1,720 lb; fresh tank 39 gal vs 40 gal. They match on grey tank and black tank.
