01 What makes it unique
The Salem Villa 42FLDL leaves Forest River's factory at 12,209 lbs dry with 1,511 lbs of cargo capacity. Forest River publishes no GVWR for this line, so the loaded rating is not quoted on this page and is not computed from the other two figures. What the cargo number covers is defined by the factory: fresh water, gear, food, batteries and every dealer-installed accessory come out of it. Fresh water is 8.3 lb per gallon, so filling the 40-gallon fresh tank spends 332 lbs of the 1,511 lbs before anything else goes in.
Tongue weight is 1,720 lbs, 14% of the dry weight as published; it rises as the trailer is loaded and counts against the tow vehicle’s tongue-weight and payload limits (tongue weight by size).
Off hookups: 120 gallons of grey and black capacity against 40 gallons of fresh water, so fresh water runs out first (tank sizes by length).
Against the rest of the Salem Villa roster this is the 6th of 12 floorplans by dry weight, in a line that runs from 9,234 lbs to 14,404 lbs. It sits in the middle of the line by weight.
Plan the tow on loaded weight, not the 12,209 lbs dry figure: half the published cargo capacity brings this plan to about 12,965 lbs. Forest River publishes no loaded rating for this line, so the ceiling is the one on the trailer’s own weight label (how to read trailer weights).
Forest River’s line listing and this floorplan’s own factory page agree on all 4 shared figures. No GVWR is published for this line, so dry plus cargo has no rating to check against. A missing row means Forest River does not publish that figure (how figures are verified).
Forest River's own description of this floorplan reads: “The Salem Grand Villa 42FLDL is a truly outstanding home away from home. This model features a unique HUGE double loft bonus room with three bunks—perfect for bringing the kids (and maybe a few friends!) along. The bathroom includes a walk-in shower and lots of cupboard space, while the island kitchen provides residential appliances and plenty of room for the aspiring chefs in your family.” That is the factory's marketing copy rather than a specification, and nothing in it is treated as a verified field on this page - layout descriptions, sleeping arrangements and feature claims in factory copy are not carried into the spec table unless the factory also publishes them as specifications.
How the 42FLDL differs from the other eleven Salem Villa floorplans. Most distinctive first. How these ranks are worked out.
- Length, 41 ft 7 in: second-shortest of twelve, between the 353FLFB (37 ft 9 in) and the 42DL (41 ft 10 in).
- Tongue weight, 1,720 lb: third-heaviest of twelve, between the 44ZEN (1,605 lb) and the 42ICE (1,745 lb).
- Tongue weight as a share of dry weight, 14.1%: third-largest of twelve, between the 40FKP (12.9%) and the 353FLFB (14.5%).
- Cargo capacity, 1,511 lb: fourth-smallest of twelve, between the 42QBQ (1,336 lb) and the 40RLB (1,841 lb).
- Dry weight, 12,209 lb: sixth-lightest of twelve, between the 42QBQ (12,029 lb) and the 40FKP (12,269 lb).
- Exterior height, 13 ft 3 in: shared with the 42ICE; of twelve, six lower and four taller, nearest the 42DL (13 ft) and the 40FKP, 40ZZZ and two others (13 ft 4 in).
- Grey tank, 80 gal: shared with the 40FKP, 42DL and three others; of twelve, four smaller and two larger, nearest the 42DMS (70 gal) and the 40RLB and 40ZZZ (120 gal).
Next to the 42QBQ, the nearest lighter floorplan by dry weight, the 42FLDL is 180 lb heavier by dry weight, has 175 lb more cargo capacity, has a tongue weight 355 lb heavier, is 9 in shorter, stands 7 in taller and has a black tank 40 gal smaller; the two publish the same fresh tank and grey tank.
Next to the 40FKP, the nearest heavier floorplan by dry weight, the 42FLDL is 60 lb lighter by dry weight, has 489 lb less cargo capacity, has a tongue weight 135 lb heavier, is 1 ft 8 in shorter and stands 1 in lower; the two publish the same fresh tank, grey tank and black tank.

The 2027 model year, as Forest River lists it
Forest River’s own floorplan page lists the 2027 Salem Villa / Wildwood Lodge 42FLDL with the figures below (read 22 Oct 2026). They are that year’s record. The specifications above are the 2026 record; the two are not merged, and neither fills a gap in the other. Every weight, dimension and tank figure in it matches the 2026 record above. Forest River publishes no GVWR for this floorplan, so none is shown and none is computed.

03 The Salem Villa floorplan family
These are destination trailers - towed to a seasonal site, levelled, and largely left there - and the numbers only make sense read that way. Fourteen floorplans run 9,234 to 14,404 lb dry against cargo capacity of just 886 to 2,446 lb. On a touring trailer that ratio would be a warning; here it is the design, because the trailer is not being loaded for a trip. What it does mean is that the fit-out a seasonal site accumulates eats the margin quickly, and 886 lb is not much once a screen room, a grill and a season of furniture are aboard. All fourteen are bumper pull, with 1,260 to 1,855 lb on the tongue - for a tow most owners make twice a year, which is why so many of these are delivered rather than towed by the buyer. Forest River splits the roster into a standard group and a Grand group, and the split is real: the six Grand plans start at 12,209 lb dry where the six standard plans start at 9,234 lb. Fresh water is 39 to 40 gallons across the whole roster, which is a plumbed-site number rather than a boondocking one and tells you plainly what these are for.

Forest River publishes this roster under four names on two factory line pages: Salem Villa and Salem Grand Villa on one, Wildwood Lodge and Wildwood Grand Lodge on the other. The two pages carry the same fourteen floorplan codes and the same specifications - 231 non-null published fields on each side, and the only differences across all fourteen plans are five floorplan description sentences that differ because each names its own badge. That is the same east/west twin naming already reflected in this reference's merged Salem and Wildwood hubs, so this line is catalogued once under all four names rather than twice. Forest River publishes no GVWR for any of the fourteen, so the loaded rating row reads not published rather than showing dry weight plus cargo capacity added together - that sum is an inference, not a rating, and a trailer's real limit can sit below it. Twelve plans are profiled; two, 42FK and 42VERANDA, are marked dealer stock only by the factory and are catalogued with their weights instead. Floorplan descriptions are published for 7 of the 14. Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not published in this channel.
04 Notes on this floorplan
What Forest River does not publish for this line
Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not in Forest River’s specification channel for Salem Villa, so this page does not publish them and does not estimate them (how figures are verified).
There is no factory GVWR for this trailer
Forest River publishes dry weight, cargo capacity and tongue weight for every Salem Villa floorplan and publishes no GVWR for any of them. The factory's own glossary defines cargo capacity as GVWR minus UVW, which means the rating can be worked out - and a figure you worked out is not a figure the manufacturer published, so this page does not print one. Use the weight label on the trailer itself, which every Forest River unit carries.
Weigh it before you tow it
Forest River calls its unloaded weight an estimated average for a standard build, and options and dealer add-ons change it, so weigh your own trailer loaded the way you travel (how figures are verified).
05 How it compares
12,029 lbs dry against this plan's 12,209 lbs, a difference of 180 lbs.
12,269 lbs dry, 60 lbs more than this plan, and 2,000 lbs of cargo capacity against this one's 1,511 lbs.
2,400 lbs of cargo capacity, the highest of the 12 Salem Villa floorplans profiled here. If payload rather than length is the binding constraint, that is the plan to compare against.
06 Loading it for a trip
A full 40-gallon fresh tank is about 332 lb of water, 22% of the 42FLDL’s 1,511 lb cargo capacity, leaving 1,179 lb. Across 12 Salem Villa floorplans the water share runs 14% to 37%, and 3 give up more than this one. Nearest on that share: Salem Villa 40RLB at 18% and Salem Villa 42QBQ at 25%.
07 Where this floorplan sits
Closest sibling: the Salem Villa 40FKP, nearest on the published figures. It differs on 4 of the 7 fields both publish (this plan first): length 41 ft 7 in vs 43 ft 3 in; dry weight 12,209 lb vs 12,269 lb; cargo capacity 1,511 lb vs 2,000 lb; hitch weight 1,720 lb vs 1,585 lb. They match on fresh tank, grey tank and black tank.
