01 What makes the 2026 287BHS different
The Jay Flight SLX 287BHS is one of Jayco's Jay Flight SLX travel trailers, the lighter value tier of Jayco’s Jay Flight nameplate. This page covers one model year of it — the 2026 287BHS, exactly as Jayco published it — because the numbers that decide whether your truck can pull this trailer are not the same from one year to the next. Jayco publishes it at 8' 0" wide closed and 11' 0" with the slide-outs run out for the 2026 model year, which is the measurement that matters for a site pitch as well as for the road.
For the 2026 model year Jayco published a 7,950-pound GVWR on a 6,230-pound dry weight, 1,720 pounds of published cargo capacity, a 745-pound dry tongue weight. That dry tongue is 12% of the dry weight, inside the 10–15% band conventionally quoted for a bumper-pull trailer. Tongue weight is not fixed — it moves with how the trailer is loaded, and weight added ahead of the axles raises it. A tongue load in that range wants a weight-distribution hitch, and the tow vehicle's tongue-weight limit is a separate number from its trailer-weight limit — check the loaded tongue against the hitch receiver's rating and the vehicle's payload, not against the tow rating alone. The 2026 trailer left the factory on ST205/75R14'D' tyres; the load range in that code is part of the axle rating and a replacement set has to match it.
Against the 2025 build of the same floorplan, 5 published fields moved. The full comparison is in section 02, and it is drawn from two separate verified factory records rather than from one record and an assumption about the other.
A 2026 trailer is close to current as of 2026, but section 05 still applies: check it against its build date rather than its model year. Jayco commonly builds a model year well before the calendar year turns, and the tyre date codes have to be read against the build month, not the badge.
How the 287BHS differs from the other 35 Jay Flight SLX floorplans. Most distinctive first. Sibling pages may cover other model years than this one (2018–2026). How these ranks are worked out.

Specifications by model year
This floorplan has a published factory record for 6 model years here, 2018 to 2026. The specification does not hold still: GVWR runs from 7,500 lb (2018) to 7,950 lb (2026); dry weight runs from 6,025 lb (2018) to 6,230 lb (2026); dry tongue weight runs from 660 lb (2018) to 755 lb (2025). The published sleeping capacity changes across the years: 8-10 in 2018, 8 - 10 in 2019, 8-10 in 2020–2021, up to 10 in 2025–2026. Each year’s complete record is printed separately below, carrying only that year’s own published figures and source. Nothing is copied across from a neighbouring year.
| Model year | Dry (UVW) | GVWR | Cargo (CCC) | Dry tongue | Length | Sleeps | Tire size |

| 2018 | 6,025 | 7,500 | 1,475 | 660 | 33' 5" | 8-10 | Not published |

Every row is that model year’s own record from Jayco’s model page or factory brochure for that year, as the source line for each year names. Jayco’s 2020 brochure prints a GVWR of 7,500 lb for the 287BHS; the unloaded weight (6,171 lb) and cargo capacity (703 lb) it prints beside it add to 6,874 lb, 626 lb less, which the same brochure’s definition of cargo capacity (“equal to or less than GVWR minus UVW”) allows, so the 2020 row gives the GVWR as a rating and the 2020 record sets out every figure exactly as printed. The figures in the tow-critical placard at the top of this page are the 2026 record from the source this catalogue originally profiled. On the weights, overall length and tire size, that record and Jayco’s own 2026 model page agree on every field both of them publish. Exterior height is not compared: Jayco publishes a bare height, a with-A/C height and a with-2nd-A/C height, and the single height row carried here cannot be matched to one of them, so no claim is made either way.

What changed for the 2018 model year
2018 is the earliest model year of the 287BHS on this site, so there is no earlier record to set it against. Section 01 compares it with 2019.
Source for 2018. Specifications reflect the 2018 model year as published by Jayco on its own 2018 factory brochure for this product line, and are dry factory figures for a base unit. Options, dealer-installed equipment and cargo all add weight. A travel trailer puts its tongue load on the tow vehicle's hitch and through its rear axle, so the loaded tongue must be checked against the receiver's rating and the vehicle's payload, not against its tow rating. Dry weight plus cargo capacity ties out exactly to the published GVWR for this model year. CamperTrailers.com publishes verified manufacturer data and is not affiliated with Jayco, Inc.

GVWR for 2020: cargo capacity is printed 626 lb under GVWR minus dry weight
Jayco’s 2020 brochure prints, on one line of the specs table of its “Jay Flight SLX 8” section, an unloaded vehicle weight of 6,171 lb, a cargo carrying capacity of 703 lb and a GVWR of 7,500 lb for the 287BHS. The published cargo capacity is 626 lb less than GVWR minus dry weight. The same brochure defines its terms so that this is allowed: “CCC is equal to or less than GVWR minus UVW.” and “The GVWR is equal to or greater than the sum of the UVW and the CCC.” So by Jayco’s own definition the three figures do not contradict each other, and the GVWR is given here as a usable rating. Plan the load to the published cargo capacity (703 lb), the lower of the two figures; all three are reproduced exactly as Jayco printed them and none has been adjusted. The weight label and VIN placard on the trailer itself state its actual figures and govern, not the brochure and not this page.
Source for 2020. Specifications reflect the 2020 model year as published by Jayco on its own 2020 factory brochure for this product line (Jayco’s 2020 brochure itself notes: “Some specs at the time of print may include estimates.”), and are dry factory figures for a base unit. Options, dealer-installed equipment and cargo all add weight. A travel trailer puts its tongue load on the tow vehicle's hitch and through its rear axle, so the loaded tongue must be checked against the receiver's rating and the vehicle's payload, not against its tow rating. Published figures that do not sum, within Jayco’s own definition: for 2020 Jayco’s dry weight (6,171 lb) plus its cargo capacity (703 lb) comes to 6,874 lb, 626 lb less than the GVWR of 7,500 lb printed beside them. The same brochure defines cargo capacity as “equal to or less than GVWR minus UVW”, so the shortfall is allowed by the maker’s own definition and the GVWR is given here as a rating; plan the load to the published cargo capacity, and the trailer’s own weight label and VIN placard govern. Loaded range: 10–15% of GVWR on the tongue, a rule of thumb, not a measurement of this unit. No truck ratings or hitch classes (why; NHTSA, DOT HS 809 433).
03 What changed for the 2026 model year
Jayco changed 5 of the published fields between the 2025 and 2026 287BHS. Every figure in both columns is that model year's own factory record — nothing here is carried across from the other year.
| Field | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry weight (UVW) | 6,195 | 6,230 | +35 lb |
| GVWR | 7,900 | 7,950 | +50 lb |
| Cargo capacity (CCC) | 1,705 | 1,720 | +15 lb |
| Dry tongue weight | 755 | 745 | -10 lb |
| Exterior height | 10' 6" | 10' 5" | — |
| Model year | Dry (UVW) | GVWR | Dry tongue | Sleeps | Tire size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 6,025 | 7,500 | 660 | 10 | Not published |
| 2019 | 6,140 | 7,500 | 665 | 10 | Not published |
| 2020 | 6,171 | 7,500 | 670 | 10 | Not published |

| 2026 | 6,230 | 7,950 | 745 | 10 | ST205/75R14'D' |
Every row is that model year's own factory record, and each year links to its own page. The fuller table at the top of this page adds cargo capacity and names any model year that is deliberately not published here.
GVWR changed for 2026
GVWR was 7,900 for 2025 and is 7,950 for 2026 (+50 lb). Both figures are the manufacturer's own for their year.
Dry tongue weight changed for 2026
Dry tongue weight was 755 for 2025 and is 745 for 2026 (-10 lb). Both figures are the manufacturer's own for their year.
Where these numbers come from
Every figure on this page is read from Jayco's own 2026 model page for the 287BHS — one source, one model year, no blending. The all-years parent page sets this year beside every other model year we hold, and where the record this catalogue originally profiled disagrees with Jayco's own model page, both figures are published there and neither is adjusted.
Fields Jayco does not publish for 2026
For this model year the factory record omits: Propane Unit (lbs) (Optional), Water Heater, Furnace, Auto-ignition (BTU output). Those rows read “Not published” on this page. They are deliberately not filled in from an adjacent model year — a neighbouring year's figure is an inference about this one, not a measurement of it.
04 Buying a 2026 287BHS today
Still in warranty
A current-model-year trailer is normally inside Jayco's structural and component warranties. Get the delivery PDI paperwork and confirm the warranty start date is the date of sale, not the date of build.
Check the build date, not the model year
Model-year 2026 units can be built well before the calendar year turns. The federal certification label inside the entry door carries the real month of manufacture, and it is what the tyre date codes should be read against.
Weigh it before you tow it
Every weight on this page is a DRY factory figure for the 2026 model year. A used trailer carries its previous owner's additions, and a travel trailer puts its tongue load on the tow vehicle's hitch and through its rear axle. Weigh the loaded rig at a public scale and check it against the tow vehicle's payload, rear-axle and hitch ratings.
05 How it compares — and to its other years
The same floorplan one model year earlier, with its own published weights.
Every Jay Flight SLX floorplan this catalogue holds a verified factory record for, with its own published weights.
06 Loading it for a trip
A full 52-gallon fresh tank is about 432 lb of water (water counts as cargo: 49 CFR 571.110 S9.3.2), 25% of the 287BHS’s 1,720 lb cargo capacity, leaving 1,288 lb (129 lb per rated berth). 11 NHTSA safety record
NHTSA holds 16 recall campaigns and 24 owner complaints (model years 2005 on) against the Jay Flight SLX line (a recall and a complaint are not the same thing).
What to look at on a used one. Across the 24 complaints filed on this line the most-reported components are equipment (33%), electrical system (17%) and fuel/propulsion system (17%).
Recall coverage here is not complete, and complaints are owners’ unverified reports (how this record is built). Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the Jay Flight SLX line page.
