01 What makes it unique
The IBEX 20FKDS has 1,500 lbs of cargo capacity between 5,678 lbs dry and its 7,178 lbs GVWR, 21% of that rating; filling its 40-gallon fresh tank at 8.3 lb a gallon uses 332 lbs of it (how to read trailer weights).
Tongue weight is 800 lbs, 14% of the dry weight as published; it rises as the trailer is loaded and counts against the tow vehicle’s tongue-weight and payload limits (tongue weight by size).
Off hookups: 90 gallons of grey and black capacity against 40 gallons of fresh water, so fresh water runs out first (tank sizes by length).
Against the rest of the IBEX roster this is the 12th of 16 floorplans by dry weight, in a line that runs from 3,778 lbs to 6,733 lbs. It sits in the heavier third of the line.
Plan the tow on loaded weight, not the 5,678 lbs dry figure: half the published cargo capacity brings this plan to about 6,428 lbs, and the published GVWR of 7,178 lbs is the limit (how to read trailer weights).
Forest River’s line listing and this floorplan’s own factory page agree on all 4 shared figures. Dry weight plus cargo capacity equals the published GVWR exactly. A missing row means Forest River does not publish that figure (how figures are verified).
Forest River's own description of this floorplan reads: “The 20FKDS is a spacious, well-designed travel trailer that combines comfort and functionality for any adventure. The front kitchen offers ample counter space, modern appliances, and a breakfast bar, while the tri-fold sofa slide adds living and sleeping room. A walk-through bath leads to a private rear bedroom with a queen bed and storage. Built for extended seasons with an enclosed underbelly and forced heat, the…” That is the factory's marketing copy rather than a specification, and nothing in it is treated as a verified field on this page - layout descriptions, sleeping arrangements and feature claims in factory copy are not carried into the spec table unless the factory also publishes them as specifications.
How the 20FKDS differs from the other fifteen IBEX floorplans. Most distinctive first. How these ranks are worked out.
- Tongue weight, 800 lb: third-heaviest of sixteen, between the 26BRE (760 lb) and the 25RLSS (850 lb).
- Dry weight, 5,678 lb: fifth-heaviest of sixteen, between the 23MBH (5,108 lb) and the 25RLSS (5,743 lb).
- GVWR, 7,178 lb: fifth-highest of sixteen, between the 23MBH (6,600 lb) and the 25RLSS (7,243 lb).
- Length, 27 ft 7 in: fifth-longest of sixteen, between the 23MBH (26 ft 2 in) and the 25RLSS (29 ft).
- Tongue weight as a share of dry weight, 14.1%: sixth-largest of sixteen, between the 16MKS (13.1%) and the 16MKD (14.2%).
- Grey tank, 60 gal: largest of sixteen, level with the 25MLB and 26BRE; next are the 16MKS, 20MDS and three others (40 gal).
- Cargo capacity as a share of GVWR, 20.9%: seventh-smallest of sixteen, between the 25RLSS (20.7%) and the 19MSB (21%).
Next to the 23MBH, the nearest lighter floorplan by dry weight, the 20FKDS is 570 lb heavier by dry weight, has a GVWR 578 lb higher, has 8 lb more cargo capacity, has a tongue weight 50 lb heavier, is 1 ft 5 in longer and has a grey tank 20 gal larger; the two publish the same exterior height, fresh tank and black tank.
Next to the 25RLSS, the nearest heavier floorplan by dry weight, the 20FKDS is 65 lb lighter by dry weight, has a GVWR 65 lb lower, has a tongue weight 50 lb lighter, is 1 ft 5 in shorter and has a grey tank 20 gal larger; the two publish the same cargo capacity, exterior height, fresh tank and black tank.

Towing it
Check your vehicle. Enter the ratings from your owner’s manual and the door-pillar placard.
Compares your figures with this page’s published GVWR (7,178 lb) and the upper loaded tongue estimate (1,077 lb, a rule of thumb). Your vehicle’s placard and the trailer’s own weight label govern.
Loaded range: 10–15% of GVWR on the tongue, a rule of thumb, not a measurement of this unit. No truck ratings or hitch classes (why; NHTSA, DOT HS 809 433). The range starts at the published figure, because loaded is never lighter than that.
The 2027 model year, as Forest River lists it
Forest River’s own floorplan page lists the 2027 IBEX 20FKDS with the figures below (read 22 Oct 2026). They are that year’s record. The specifications above are the 2026 record; the two are not merged, and neither fills a gap in the other. Every weight, dimension and tank figure in it matches the 2026 record above. Unloaded weight plus cargo capacity equals the 2027 GVWR exactly. Forest River’s 2027 page lists two versions of the 20FKDS: the default version, whose figures are in the table, and a Beast Mode option package, listed on its own line under the table with its own figures.

03 The IBEX floorplan family
IBEX is Forest River's lightweight four-season travel trailer, built at the company's Outdoors RV-adjacent end of the travel-trailer range rather than in the value tier. The roster runs from a 16-foot single-axle at under 4,100 lb dry to a tandem-axle 26-footer. Forest River publishes a full weight and capacity block for every floorplan, which is why this line could be catalogued completely rather than partially.

IBEX is Forest River's lightweight travel-trailer line. Twenty-two floorplans are published for 2027, including four dealer-stock-only plans that are catalogued here but are not orderable through the normal channel. Forest River publishes dry weight, GVWR, cargo capacity, tongue weight, all three exterior dimensions and all three tank capacities for the roster. It publishes no sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size or MSRP in this channel, so those rows are absent rather than estimated.
04 Notes on this floorplan
What Forest River does not publish for this line
Sleeping capacity, axle count, tire size and MSRP are not in Forest River’s specification channel for IBEX, so this page does not publish them and does not estimate them (how figures are verified).
Weigh it before you tow it
Forest River calls its unloaded weight an estimated average for a standard build, and options and dealer add-ons change it, so weigh your own trailer loaded the way you travel (how figures are verified).
05 How it compares
5,108 lbs dry against this plan's 5,678 lbs, a difference of 570 lbs.
5,743 lbs dry, 65 lbs more than this plan, and 1,500 lbs of cargo capacity against this one's 1,500 lbs.
1,802 lbs of cargo capacity, the highest of the 16 IBEX floorplans profiled here. If payload rather than length is the binding constraint, that is the plan to compare against.
06 Loading it for a trip
A full 40-gallon fresh tank is about 332 lb of water (water counts as cargo: 49 CFR 571.110 S9.3.2), 22% of the 20FKDS’s 1,500 lb cargo capacity, leaving 1,168 lb. Across 16 IBEX floorplans the water share runs 14% to 36%, and 3 give up more than this one. Nearest on that share: IBEX 20MDS at 22% and IBEX 23MBH at 22%. Your own unit’s figure is on the label inside its entry door (49 CFR 571.110 S9.3.3).
07 Where this floorplan sits
Closest sibling: the IBEX 25RLSS, nearest on the published figures. It differs on 5 of the 8 fields both publish (this plan first): length 27 ft 7 in vs 29 ft 0 in; dry weight 5,678 lb vs 5,743 lb; GVWR 7,178 lb vs 7,243 lb; hitch weight 800 lb vs 850 lb; grey tank 60 gal vs 40 gal. They match on cargo capacity, fresh tank and black tank.

11 NHTSA safety record
NHTSA holds 8 recall campaigns and 3 owner complaints (model years 2005 on) against the IBEX line (a recall and a complaint are not the same thing).
Too few reports to show a pattern. 3 complaints have been filed on this line — not enough to say what fails most often. They cover unknown or other.
Recall coverage here is not complete, and complaints are owners’ unverified reports (how this record is built). Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the IBEX line page.
