01 What makes it unique

The 17MAV is the entry to the whole Momentum family and the smallest garage Grand Design sells under the name: twenty-two feet eleven inches overall, 5,542 pounds dry, and $47,462 — a third of what the flagship 392M lists for. It is a MAV, which means a 24-inch DoveTail loading ramp, a garage pull-down screen, no wheel wells in the garage and a flat floor, under an R-40 TPO roof with a limited lifetime warranty and R-9 insulated walls. The factory publishes no slide count for this plan. It sleeps two.

The payload is the headline and it is remarkable: 9,950 pounds of GVWR against 5,542 dry leaves 4,408 pounds — roughly eighty percent of the trailer's own empty weight, and more cargo capacity than the entry Momentum fifth wheel gets at three times the price. The 873-pound dry tongue is the lightest in the family. And this is a MAV, so there is no fuel station: Grand Design prints N/A into the Fuel Capacity field on all five MAV floorplans and carries no fuel bullet anywhere in the MAV feature list, so no fuel figure appears on this page. If you want an onboard pump, you want a G-Class.

Overall length and height are drawn true to scale from the published figures, and the end view uses the same scale. Axle count is as published; axle position, wheel size and the nose profile are schematic. This is a size drawing, not a floorplan, and not a claim about body shape.

Holding tanks

Published tank capacities on one scale. A full fresh tank is about 751 lbs of water — roughly 17% of this plan’s 4,408 lb cargo capacity, before you load anything else.

These graphics are generated from the same verified record that builds the table above, and are published under this site’s own licence — nothing here is traced from, or derived from, a manufacturer drawing or photo. Where a figure is not published for this plan, the graphic that would need it is omitted rather than estimated. The full record is in the published dataset.

What it takes to tow this

Built from this floorplan’s verified weights. We publish the trailer side only.

Minimum tow rating your vehicle needs9,950 lb
Published dry tongue weight873 lb
Loaded tongue weight, typical range995–1,492 lb
Minimum receiver hitch capacity9,950 lb towed / 1,492 lb tongue
The tongue weight above is dry. It is the figure the manufacturer publishes for an empty trailer. Loaded — with water, propane, batteries and your gear — it runs higher, which is why the range row uses loaded weight. Sizing your truck off the dry number under-budgets your payload.
The arithmetic that actually binds. Open your driver’s door and read the payload figure on the yellow-and-white sticker — that number is specific to your truck as built. Subtract from it: loaded tongue weight (use the range above), every passenger, everything in the bed and cab, and the weight-distributing hitch itself where one is used. What is left is your margin. Payload, not tow rating, is what most half-ton owners run out of first.

We do not publish tow ratings for specific trucks. A single model can vary by thousands of pounds depending on engine, axle ratio, cab, drivetrain and package — the only authoritative figure is the one on your own door jamb. Loaded tongue percentages are industry convention for travel trailers (10–15% of loaded weight), not a measurement of this unit. Hitch classes are not used here as a rating: SAE J684 covers trailers to 10,000 lb GVWR and does not define Class V, and capacity boundaries differ between manufacturers — read the rating stamped on your hitch.

03 The Momentum floorplan family

Momentum is Grand Design's toy-hauler family, and it spans four rosters across both tow types. The full-size Momentum fifth wheel is the flagship — a 101-inch wide-body coach on MORryde independent suspension with disc brakes, carrying a 60-gallon dual fuel station. The Momentum G-Class fifth wheel sits below it on MORryde CRE3000 suspension and a Rotoflex pin box with a 30-gallon fuel station, and the G-Class travel trailer puts that same garage behind a bumper pull. The Momentum MAV is the compact end — the lightest and cheapest way into a Momentum garage, and the one roster with no fuel station at all. The 17MAV on this page is highlighted; each other profiled plan links to its own page. The full MY2027 catalogue runs to 28 floorplans across the four rosters; eight are profiled in depth here and the rest are catalogued on the line hub with their weights.

The Momentum MAV is the compact end of the family — the lightest, cheapest way into a Momentum garage, on a single-axle-to-tandem bumper-pull with a 24-inch DoveTail loading ramp. It is the one Momentum roster that does NOT carry a fuel station: Grand Design prints N/A into the Fuel Capacity field on all five MAV plans and omits the fuel bullet from the MAV feature list, so no fuel figure is shown here. Additional MAV floorplans are catalogued on the line hub.

04 What owners & reviewers report

Payload is eighty percent of dry weight

4,408 pounds of cargo capacity against 5,542 pounds dry — more payload than the entry Momentum fifth wheel, which weighs nearly three times as much.

No fuel station — and that is published, not missing

Grand Design prints N/A into the Fuel Capacity field on every MAV plan and omits the fuel bullet from the MAV feature list entirely. Four separate factory surfaces agree. The other three Momentum rosters all carry one.

Slide count not published

The factory publishes no number of slides for this plan. We do not infer one.

Sleeps two

The lowest sleeping capacity in the family. This is a garage with a bed, not a family trailer.

Momentum MAV 28MAV

Eleven feet longer, sleeps six, adds a slide — but the payload drops to 2,700 pounds and the garage gets shorter.

↑ One step up
Momentum G-Class 21G

Four feet longer and twenty-six thousand more, but it adds a 30-gallon fuel station, a slide and a fourteen-foot garage, and sleeps six.

Heartland Cyclone 2214

The smallest Cyclone — 11,700 pounds of GVWR sleeping four, with a mandatory 30-gallon fuel tank the MAV does not offer.

06 Loading it for a trip

This floorplan carries its water comfortably. A full 90-gallon fresh tank is roughly 17% of the 4,408-pound cargo capacity, leaving the 17MAV with a usable gear budget even when you tow full.

Weight budgetFigureWhat it means
Cargo capacity as published (CCC)4,408 lbEverything you add: gear, water, propane, batteries, food, people’s belongings.
Fresh tank filled (90 gal × 8.34 lb)−751 lbWater is the heaviest thing most owners add, and it is added first.

Per sleeping position, water aboard1,829 lbA rough share of what is left across the 2 berths this plan sleeps.

The published dry tongue weight of 873 pounds is 16% of the 5,542-pound dry weight — at or above the top of the usual 10–15% band before you load anything. A nose-heavy dry figure eats truck payload directly, so budget the hitch load against your door-jamb sticker rather than against the tow rating.

Nothing above changes the ceiling. Loaded to its 9,950-pound GVWR the 17MAV is towing 4,408 pounds more than its 5,542-pound dry figure, and that is the number your vehicle has to be rated for — not the brochure weight.

Tank balance is generous here: 90 gallons of fresh against 74 grey and 37 black, so waste capacity keeps pace with supply and the fresh tank is the constraint that ends a dry stay.

07 Where this floorplan sits

Of the 8 Momentum floorplans profiled here, the 17MAV is the lightest by GVWR at 9,950 pounds — the entry point to the line and the one most likely to suit a vehicle already at its limit.

Either side of it in the same line: Momentum 21G is 1,050 pounds heavier at 11,000 lb GVWR.

Against the 17MAV: the Puma 31FKRK is 20 lb lighter and 15 ft longer and sleeps 2 more; the Westbrook Luxury 305DBLC is 25 lb lighter and 15 ft longer; the Campsite Reserve 27MR is 35 lb heavier and 12 ft longer. Those are differences in the published numbers only — what they cost, how they are built and how they live are separate questions each of those pages answers on its own terms.

Those are the nearest travel trailers from other lines by weight — one per line, picked by proximity on that figure and nothing else. They are listed so the same tow vehicle can be checked against real alternatives, not because they are equivalent inside; layout, build and price diverge sharply across that group.

For scale, the Momentum floorplans profiled here run 5,542 to 18,114 pounds dry and 23 to 46 feet of exterior length across 8 plans. Where a floorplan falls in that spread usually says more about which vehicle can tow it, and which site it fits, than the layout name does.

Every profiled floorplan in this line, with the full weight table, is on the Momentum line hub.

08 Common questions about the 17MAV

How much does the 17MAV weigh?

It leaves the factory at 5,542 pounds dry, and its manufacturer-set loaded ceiling (GVWR) is 9,950 pounds. Real towing weight lands between the two and depends entirely on what you load. Use the GVWR when matching a tow vehicle; the dry figure is only useful for comparing floorplans against each other.

How much can the 17MAV carry?

Cargo carrying capacity is 4,408 pounds. That is the whole budget: water, propane, batteries, gear and everything you bring. Filling the 90-gallon fresh tank uses about 751 pounds of that.

What is the tongue weight of the 17MAV?

The published dry tongue weight is 873 pounds. It is measured empty; loaded, it runs higher, and it comes out of your tow vehicle’s payload rather than its tow rating.

What size tow vehicle does the 17MAV need?

Your vehicle needs a tow rating of at least 9,950 pounds — this floorplan’s GVWR — and enough payload left over for the hitch load, passengers and anything in the bed. This site does not publish tow ratings for specific vehicles, because one truck model varies by thousands of pounds across engine, axle ratio, cab and package. The figure that governs is the payload sticker on your own door jamb.

How many people does the 17MAV sleep?

It is rated to sleep 2. Rated sleeping positions include convertible furniture, so count the beds against how you actually travel rather than against the number.

What are the tank capacities on the 17MAV?

Fresh 90 gallons, grey 74 gallons, black 37 gallons. Tank sizes set how long the floorplan can sit away from hookups, and the smallest of the three is what ends the stay.

How long is the 17MAV?

Exterior length is 22 ft 11 in. Measure against your site length and your storage before committing — the exterior figure is the one that has to fit, and it includes the tongue or pin box.

Every figure in these answers is read from this page’s verified specification table. Where the manufacturer publishes nothing, the question is not answered rather than estimated.

09 What this page publishes, and what it does not

This catalog tracks 18 specification fields per floorplan. Named sources publish 15 of them for the 17MAV. The rest are not shown, because the alternative is reading a figure across from a sibling floorplan or from what the segment usually does — and a number nobody published is worth less than an admitted gap.

Not published for this floorplan: slide count, axle count, tire specification. If you find one of these in a manufacturer document for this plan, it belongs on this page.

The completeness figure at the foot of this page (97%) measures the same thing on the full field set: it is a measurement of how much this floorplan’s manufacturer publishes, not of how much research went into the page.

How every figure here was sourced and checked is set out on the methodology page.

11 NHTSA safety record

This floorplan belongs to the Momentum line, and NHTSA holds 19 recall campaigns and 201 owner complaints against that line. They are separate records and are not added together — a recall is a manufacturer-confirmed defect with a remedy; a complaint is one owner’s account, which NHTSA does not verify.

What to look at on a used one. Across the 201 complaints filed on this line the most-reported components are structure (41%), unknown or other (19%) and suspension (10%). That is where owners of this family have had trouble, so it is where an inspection is worth the time.

Recall coverage is not complete — our harvest of NHTSA’s recall API ran 1,556 queries, of which 0 failed and 242 returned an explicit zero. A line can still be under-reported where NHTSA files a roster under a parent name, or where a match rests on the wording of the recall rather than its model field. Complaints come from the complete bulk file but are unverified and self-selected: a high count tracks how many units a line sold at least as much as how well it was built. Check a specific VIN at NHTSA before you buy. Full tables are on the Momentum line page.
