01 What makes it unique
The Catalina Summit Series 8 281QBUNK is the biggest plan in the Summit 8 range and the family flagship of the metal-sided tier. A front bedroom anchors one end; a U-shaped dinette and a single slide open the living area; rear bunk beds sleep the kids; and a full-size exterior camp kitchen with its own sink rides outside, adding 30 gallons of grey capacity. A panoramic 10-foot slide window brings in light, and nominal capacity reaches ten — a genuine large-family layout.
At 7,390 pounds unloaded and 36 feet 2 inches, the 281QBUNK is a half-ton-plus or three-quarter-ton tow, not a light SUV trailer. Its 8,890-pound GVWR leaves about 1,500 pounds of cargo capacity. Standard equipment is full 12-volt residential — a GE 10.7-cubic-foot 12V refrigerator, a 60,000-BTU tankless water heater, a 13,500-BTU ducted air conditioner with a heat pump, a 35,000-BTU furnace and residential in-floor ducted heat — and a hot-climate option fits three non-ducted 18,000-BTU Furrion air conditioners on a 50-amp service.
Construction is the line’s metal-sided value build — a Norco powder-coated steel I-beam frame, a Platinum .024-inch aluminum exterior with a smooth radius front, a seamless Alpha roof membrane and a 5/8-inch StableDeck floor — with JBL Aura audio and a 600-watt solar prep. The 44-gallon fresh tank is the largest among the profiled Summit plans. For a big family that wants bunks, a U-dinette and a real outside kitchen without stepping up to the pricier Legacy Edition, the 281QBUNK is the value large-format choice.

Every Catalina is built on a Norco electromagnetic powder-coated cambered steel I-beam frame with full-length outriggers, a 5/8-inch tongue-and-groove StableDeck floor, a Platinum .024-inch aluminum (metal-sided) exterior with a smooth aluminum radius front, and a seamless Alpha roof membrane with a lifetime warranty. Standard equipment is full 12-volt residential: a GE 10.7-cubic-foot 12V refrigerator, a GE 60,000-BTU tankless water heater, a GE 13,500-BTU ducted air conditioner with a heat pump, JBL Aura audio and a 600-watt solar prep. The Legacy Edition adds solid-surface kitchen counters, upgraded aluminum wheels, washer/dryer prep, a larger awning, a full outside camp kitchen and available BAL auto-leveling. Lengths, weights and equipment change with options, sub-line and model year — always confirm against the unit's own weight sticker. Additional Summit, Legacy, Trail Blazer and Destination floorplans are catalogued on the line hub.
04 What owners & reviewers report
Largest Summit 8, sleeps ten
A 36-foot front-bedroom, U-dinette, rear-bunk family layout with a full outside kitchen — the value large-format plan below the Legacy tier.
Full-size outside camp kitchen with sink
Adds 30 gallons of grey-tank capacity — a genuine second kitchen, not just a flip-down counter.
Triple-A/C option for hot climates
A 50-amp service with three non-ducted 18,000-BTU Furrion air conditioners is available — standard is a single 13,500-BTU ducted unit.
A half-ton-plus tow, not a light trailer
At 7,390 lb UVW and nearly 1,000 lb of hitch weight, the 281QBUNK needs a capable half-ton or a three-quarter-ton truck — confirm payload, not just tow rating.
Selling price runs well below the placard
Dealer placards run higher; 2026 selling prices commonly land near $30,000. The figure shown is dealer-typical selling and is flagged.
05 How it compares
The shorter family bunkhouse — about 1,300 lb less and six feet shorter, with a booth dinette instead of a U-dinette.
The Legacy-tier bunkhouse — dual entry, double-over-double bunks, solid-surface counters and a standard outside kitchen at a lighter weight.
A comparable large-format value family plan from the Keystone value stack.
